Is inflation affecting YOU?

It is us!!! I checked my propane tank and it was at 70%. Went to google and the price of propane was abot $2.40/ gal. Today, I went be the propane dealer and paid $2.95 per gallon for 50 gallons (it only gets filled to 80%) because I KNOW it will only go UP! The delivery charge( they call it an environmental fee) has gone from $6.95 to $11.95.

In 2019, I filled the tank for about $400. Last year, the fill was $879. This year, $1350. The tank rent doubled last year (same tank, which was manufactured in 1970-something, according to it’s tag!!)

Seems like WAY more than 5.4% inflation for us!!

Ouch! I haven't noticed much...I'm not driving too much so fill-ups are infrequent. I shop the farmer's market and food coop mostly, and they carry lots of local products, like meat and dairy (tho I do buy some Organic Valley and Nancy's dairy products). I shop for just me and an occasional dinner guest and my grandson who doesn't eat much, so any rise in prices isn't going to have much effect on me. I feel really sad for those who will have to tighten their belts even further to make ends meet.

I have not noticed much personally, but DSIL ordered Christmas lights a week or so ago. He ordered exactly the same thing he had ordered last year (decided he needed 2x as many as he had last year). Last year the order was $400. This year, the same exact thing in the same exact quantity was $750. He called the company and asked why. The owner told him that because their inventory is sparse making sales sparse, they are having to charge more to keep their employees employed and their business open.

The price of gasoline is approaching $5 a gallon here, but I seldom buy it. However, I do notice it.

It seems that the price of paint and wood finishing products is going up, and I'll notice that more when we start to repaint our kitchen cabinets in Cathedral City. I haven't kept up with the price of paint, but it does seem to be getting high these days.

I see it, of course, I think everyone does. Gas is higher, food prices are higher, etc. My husband did some quotes today and as of late, he is pretty much amazed at the price of different metals, etc. I believe the cost of wood has come back down some (he doesn't use wood). We recently bought a dump-truck bed load of top soil and I personally was amazed that could cost $500. The guy who delivered the dirt said that soil was higher than gravel and some other such items. It's just the two of us, no debt and we can tighten our belts if need be. Those with children, I especially think of parents putting kids through college, etc., paying for a home, vehicles, etc. I'm sure it must be hard. I have no clue about vehicle prices right now, but I know in our area they are getting hard to find. We were recently out-of-town and drove a couple of times down this one stretch of highway that had several dealerships. We were amazed at how few vehicles were on the lots.

The grocery store is where it is really obvious to me, but I don’t go shopping or drive the way I used to. Last time I got gas at Costco it still under 3.00 and it’s at 3.04 now..so not so bad yet (knocking on wood).

It’s shocking that a tank of propane is 1300.00, that’s going to hurt a lot of folks this winter.

We’ve been vacationing in our RV for over a month now and have seen a significant increase in gas prices everywhere. Prices in restaurants seem to be a lot higher this year, as well.

Haven't had a winter-heat natural gas bill yet, but we are fortunate enough to have adequate retirement income and modest tastes to afford groceries and eating out, even if prices go up. We buy gas perhaps once a month, and have no travel plans. We do not buy holiday gifts except Christmas cards.

So no, it hasn't affected us yet.

While the increases have been bearable for us, I wonder how this will play out in the economy. We actually need a new car, and have been at a standstill on that front.

I have noticed it in the price of groceries and gasoline. That is shocking about the propane. I ordered a dishwasher a couple of months ago and will not receive it until December (hopefully). A friend got a bid on new windows pre-Covid. The price has now doubled and there is a 9 month wait. My husband is also getting to the point where he needs a new vehicle. Sigh.

Oh yeah, we have definitely seen it and it's not pretty. The more difficult part is that everything is going up so cutting in just one area is not enough. My 2 youngest kids attend a charter high school with no bus service and that requires a lot of driving to and from. For that commute we have switched to the older car that gets slightly better mileage but also uses regular and not premium fuel. I was becoming more lax in some of my grocery shopping practices but have become much more focused. The natural gas is my biggest new worry. We are on the budget plan where they spread out your payments so you are not hit as hard in the winter. We received notification that they are anticipating an 80% increase in the price of natural gas so what I have as the budget is definitely going up. Fortunately, we have a wood stove as well. Daughter has been more deliberate about staying in town overnight to help save gas costs.

I'm trying to be grateful that we only have to rearrange some of our goals (like making debt reduction take longer, which may mean putting retirement off a couple of years for DH). It is not a crisis for us but it still hurts. It also makes me wonder when interest rates will go up to help things cool off a bit.

Tish, that is true, it IS across the board!

We heat the house with propane fireplaces, and cook with it. This year, we had to add a vehicle for DH, to replace his company car. The choices were quite limited, and the one he chose does not get the best milage…..but it had to be a certain size car!!

We spent almost 6 months unemployed, so we are trying to catch up, and being a salesman in a large scale industry, the projects take TIME.

I hope it abates a bit, and you don’t have to change too much!!

Everything is crazy…a 3 pack of ribeyes for dh to grill on the weekend usually costs $30-something. I kid you not…it was $60 at the grocery last week!!! 😳

Saturday we had a power outage in our neighborhood in the middle of a huge football game. Dh and I decided to make the drive down to his office in the city (we could listen to Q3 in the car & watch Q4 on the big screen in the breakroom, lol.) Had a great time (we won😊) and thought we pick up a quick dinner on the way home. Y’all…I kid you not…first place (Moe’s) was closing up (7 ish on a Sat night) bc they didnt have enough staff. Second place (a Panera-we were getting hungry by this point,) and as we went to order, cashier said, ”I just want you to know it will be 30 minutes. We only have 2 people working.” 😳 Luckily, Chic Fil A was open, so at least we had something, but wow…it really hit home. (And no, we don’t usually eat fast food on Saturday nights but we had left the house in a rush & were in sweats, lol lol.)

Something is bad wrong with the economy; it’s pretty frightening.

The beef must be getting on outbound ships, to be that expensive, nini!!! If the ranchers are selling off (like I keep hearing on NPR), the price should be going down….

Corvettes are rolling out of the plant in HUGE numbers, so there is money out there!!

I received an email from the Lexus dealer today.. Instead of the usual listing of new and used Lexuses, it was all used cars of other brands, no Lexi in sight!

DD has a deposit down on a new Rivian. I think the original delivery date was January. I believe it is now ”sometime in 2022.” In case, like me, you are unfamiliar with Rivian, here is a picture. It is an all electric SUV.

I read a local article on beef today (and can't find it to link it). Local rancher says the price of beef is in fact not going up, but the meatpackers are raising their prices dramatically. I did check the price of some local beef, which used to be more expensive than the grocery store. It is now less expensive.

Most of the packing plants are owned by overseas interests. I saw an article today that some ranchers are going together to build a ”local” plant. I cannot stomach pre-packaged meat. (If it has space between the meat and the packaging, then it is packaged with nitrogen to keep the meat from turning in transit) I have a local grocery that still cuts and packeges its own, and amazingly, the prices have only gone up about 5 or 10 %.

If you have a local farm or farmers market, look into that. I'm ordering a local turkey that will be smoked by one of the breweries. It is $100 and I paid that last year, too.

bbstx, cool on the Rivian! Still undecided on what I'd like new, so I will continue to drive the trusty Outback. From what I've seen online from Subaru if you order an Outback you will get it but it will take 2-3 months. Good financing for new, leftover, and CPO but no deals on pricing. The new Wilderness edition is coming into dealer lots, too, but they get grabbed up pretty quickly.

Food is crazy expensive! I'm neither rich or poor but wonder how those in the middle or slightly below are surviving. Those are the ones that receive nothing because they aren't poor enough. Since I sold my house and am now living with my sons, to keep harmony, I was buying all the food. OMG, it's a fortune for four. I have since weaned down a bit. I'm not extravagant in my food shopping but it is the cost of a hefty mortgage.

I saw a story about a month ago where ranchers did this and their meat was selling in local grocery stores, then the larger meat companies complained (threatened?) the stores so they told the ranchers they would no longer sell their meat. They need to just sell directly to the public.

Went shopping with my sister today. She bought a PT beach house near us. Saw a lot of empty spaces in Target and JC Penny's. She found super soft Liz Claborne towels at JCP, but not all she needed. Empty racks and bins from the back were scattered around the department. One lady working inventory and register. She said they cannot get people to come to work.

Talk about eating out prices, last week we were in one of the larger tourist areas nearby. The menu was new and the prices were high. Lunch menu prices looked more like dinner. Pork, shrimp or fish taco $18. Gulf shrimp, 9 for $25. 12 for $29. Captian's platter $34. Shrimp and Grits $30. Stuffed Shrimp $32 for 6. Seared Gulf grouper $42. We get the Local's Discount at a lot of places, but still. A favorite place near our house also had new menus, but prices were raised, but not as high.

I think we are not as bad as some areas. I still order groceries, but I'm only getting an item or two per order that they may be out of. I have not noticed a huge increase in beef, but somewhat. I haven't bought a roast or steaks in a while. We actually have friends that are beef cattle farmers and the son (runs the beef business) has told us of problems with packing companies. He has one here that he can use for only so much of his product. He sells to several local farm to table restaurants and a couple of meat markets. So that beef is processed her locally. He has many cattle on Texas feedlots (we are in TN) and sells them once they reach weight. He did sell to the public (individuals) but that has slowed down with the processing problem here locally. If I can't get meat from him, I use a local meat market. I haven't noticed much increase in pork or chicken. The last two trips we've taken (July and earlier this month), we have noticed a shortage of staff in so many places. Signs up in so many places wanting to hire. The only thing that affected us was at a lake resort recently. We did not get daily maid service, which was fine. Better than fine actually. If we needed it, we could request it. However, I liked the fact that no one would be in our room during our stay. We could pick up clean towels, etc. at the front desk or have them delivered to the room. Our gas is up, but as usual, we are lower than many places. The only shopping I have done (in person) is antique shops and they seem the same. Have not been in department stores, etc. so I have no clue how stock is there.

DD is in Alpharetta GA moved into new house Monday. New Publix for delivery option ( they are quarantining as their 3 yr old and 4 others all asymptomatic in her class tested + Sunday after classroom exposure at their nursery/ daycare). Anyway she was getting texts every few minutes as the store was out of everything she wanted. Her previous Publix in Roswell was always well stocked. Her Costco order for foods was ok but NO paper products. Here in small town VA we have had almost no shortages the entire pandemic. Currently everything very well stocked and we shop in person as there is no such thing as delivery… except our wine store! 🤦‍♀️

Things have been a little weird. I took my 2019 4Runner to the dealer to get a factory recall, got it back & it didn't work right. Didn't want to deal with it...so....I sold it to a used car dealer for $4200 MORE than I'd paid for it. Took that money & purchased a fully loaded Benz! Straight across trade money wise. Same year, 2019 and half the miles my Runner had.♥

The price on beef, pork, chicken...hasn't changed here(Colorado). They had 20 roll packs of Scott toilet tissue, marked down to $5. Deal! ☺ Office Depot had cases stacked up of hand sanitizer w/ aloe for .10cents/12 oz bottle. Housing prices are up....and insane! Help Wanted signs everywhere. One Starbucks announced they only had enough workers to stay open for 4 hours a day.

Took me a while to read the responses, lol.!! REAL life story, right here. I raise horses. Let’s pretend they are cattle, for a moment.

I cut and bale my own hay (and pick those bales up off the ground myself, and put them in the barn myself….yes, I have guns!!). After our 2nd spring cutting, the baler came home with a flat that was not repairable. This is a fairly agricultural area, and parts are normally available, even for our old equipment.

The tire, however, was NOT to be found, anywhere in the US. Five months of searching, MONTHS. DH finally found one in a junkyard. It is not exactly what was on it, but thankfully DH could do the conversion, and it fits.

For our prime hay season, our equipment was out. This means my cows will NOT be fed this winter, or I will BUY hay at a retail price, which is about 3 times the make-it-myself price. I will sell my cows if they are a shippable weight, or I will raise the cost of my cows and hopefully recoup my costs in the spring. If I were to sell them privately, as someone suggested, I WILL pass those costs on directly.

This is happening all over. I live south of a Dixie paper goods plant. When wages go up, electricity (the plant’s machinery is run on compressed air, and air compressors run on electricity) goes up, wood pulp goes up because those macines run on diesel…..paper towels, toilet paper, etc., prices GO UP. The conglomerate that owns Dixie will NOT lose money to hold the price down, so we can…you know.

Things are a little hit or miss here, with no great shortages i have noticed. Of course I dont shop much except for grocery runs, and an occasional run to Target or another local store or two so I wouldnt notice things other than the usual TP or other paper goods.

I was in the mood for pot roast the other day, and all we could find were huge cuts. We bought a very large one that was around $36 and I cut it and froze half. It was very good, so I do think it was worth it.

Our propane tank was down to around 20%, so DH had it filled this week. Shocker of a bill was around $750, which isn’t as high as some of you pay, but high for here. About double what we paid last year.

It seems as though whenever the news people broadcast a shortage of something, the shelves empty. Why dont they just keep their ’news’ quiet and stop the panic buying? It’s like the snow forecasts when milk and bread are needlessly gone.
