Most satsuma and mandarines can be eaten even before the completely turn orange. They do get sweeter the longer they hang, until they get mealy. They look like they are ready to me. In SE Texas they start turning orange now and are good until at least end of December.

Pick one at a time. They only stay really good for a day or 2 after they are picked. Had a friend pick the entire tree, about 3 dozen, all at one time. They really should have picked only what they were going to eat in one day.

What are they? What variety?

Satsumas are late fall/early winter, Clementines early Winter, Murcotts mid to late winter.

They are Kishu manderine. Suppose to be very sweet but not the one I picked yesterday. Maybe completely orange ?

I have bought Kishus (grown in California) at the Whole Foods in mid to late-winter (January-February), so I would think yours have a ways to go. I would try another one in 2 or 3 weeks and see though, just in case yours bloomed at an odd time and are ahead of schedule.

Is this the first time it's fruited for you? Once you get to know your variety, and its idiosyncrasies, knowing when they are ripe becomes much easier.

I have a kishu as well, this year the fruit seems to be a lillte earlier than in the past. They usually start turning orange in December - January. I never know when to pick either other then by tasting them. I tend to pick things too early, inpatient I guess. I do notice the peel seems to pull away from the fruit at the top. It make it hard to pick them without leVing some of the peel behind
