old copper tub needs serious cleaning

I have an old tin-lined copper boiler with handles. I really want to get it looking spiffy to use by the fireplace but am running out of ideas. I have polished it up as best I can, but there are a lot of tough black stains on it that I believe to be baked-on resin from wood fire. Here is what I have tried:

Lemon juice and salt

Ketchup (wow, does this ever work wonderfully on copper, just not those black stains!)

steel wool and Barkeeper's Friend

Isopropyl alcohol.

Anyone have any other ideas? I called a guy to ask about soda-blasting, but it was much more expensive that the tub is worth.
