I can't tell how much space you have down there at the end.

Your hallway light fixtures seem rather non-descript.

If you get some that are rather more interesting, that will perk up the hallway quite a bit.

I would also switch out the runner for one with more style, such as a Persian carpet. Don't forget to put a pad underneath, and get some sort of fastening system.

The hallway leading to the family bedrooms is always a good place for family photos.

Art work is a good idea, too

I would add a more colorful rug and change out for a cool semi flush mount light. Something unusual on the wall, not just a print. Maybe floating shelves, round art, a clock?

Needs some light, life and color.

White needs light to come to life. Few homes have enough natural light for white to be beautiful. A wall color with more pigment that can stand up to the lower lighting conditions of most hallways. It doesn't have to be really dark or really bright colors, but it needs more color.

Your hallway lighting def needs to be changed, it looks yellowy which contributes to the darkness. Semi flush LEDs or even those wafer (easy to install) ’recessed’ lights will for sure bring a brightness and life up there. A wallpaper (cant tell your style) at the top of the stairs with maybe a coordinating color for the rest of the hall. Maybe larger more colorful art would be a good idea. I feel like the hallways in our homes are not a priority when decorating but can be a good spot to try new things. But I think you should start with lighting in the 3500k range w a dimmer.
