stl mo. zone 5/6. photo4-clay/loam mix. full sun. minimal growth. photo 2-loam. part sun. no growth. photo 3- potted. most growth. photo 1- loam. full shade. minimal growth but has enlarged it's footprint. these are 4 or 5 years in the ground.

Did you loosen up the rootballs when you planted them?

Looks like there's some root competition. Remember though, once a plant is planted...first year it sleeps, then next year it creeps, then it leaps!

Also, 'Emerald Gaity' will grow much better with sun. In shade it will want to grow as a rangy vine. In sun it will (with some shearing) form a mounding shrub.

I don't find this to be true at all! IME, this grows as a mounding shrub under any conditions.....unless given a vertical support to clamber up. Although even that will not encourage it to be very viney.

I use it (and its partner, 'Emerald and Gold') a lot in my design work, as it is extremely tolerant of dry shade and only needs the occasional "grooming" to look tidy, so quite low maintenance. It is also remarkably drought tolerant once established. But it does grow rather slowly.

This is what it will do given the support Of an 8 foot wall. I grew this one from a cutting and it did start slow. It needs clipping back but I’m letting it go at the moment because I need material for flower arrangements.

found a great solution. i just traded these for plants more suited to my needs. the new owner has a perfect location for them.
