What kind of maple is this?

My new friend told me that he has a maple tree in his small backyard. He lives in a townhouse complex. So this maple tree is in the middle of his small yard, and everyone in the complex has one. Problem is they are 12 feet apart and in a row. He really wonders what kind of maple it is. Unfortunately, he is not able to trim or remove the tree. It is affecting his garden already. Here are some pictures:

Thanks for the ID Mark. Really unfortunate for my friend since he loves gardening and has no control over this tree. As I understand it, the roots of this tree will not be the only ones in the soil in his backyard as the other trees from both sides will cover his backyard too. I always blamed my two sugar maples for the roots in my backyard and making my plants suffer and diminish in size. It took me years to figure out that the Norway maple two doors over are actually in my backyard too!
