Our builder framed out our slab foundation with the fireplace option. We did not opt for a fireplace in the design. We told them about the issue at the pre-construction meeting and were assured it would be fixed prior to pouring...it was not. The foundation was poured incorrectly. The fireplace juts out into the patio. They said they would fix it. When I asked how, they said they "would cut the fireplace off and topcoat the patio".
My concern is that the footings follow the perimeter of the foundation to include the jut out of the fireplace. If they cut that fireplace part off, should they be digging new footings to support the area that the fireplace was?
I know nothing about structural engineering and just want to make sure I am getting a home that will not have foundation issues because of this mistake. I don't know what would be acceptable-from a structural engineering standpoint-to fix this. I could trust the builder's answer, but they haven't given me a whole lot of reasons to trust that they will do it right so far.
