Bc, Cream Veranda is a wonderful rose. i wouldn’t hesitate to recommend that rose to anyone

I loved it....was always covered in flowers and it grew (and stayed) to be a nice 3 ft round shrub ,

The Hortico website has been weird on my phone too. Can only view it on my computer for some reason

I have Nicole's email address if you want...then just ask her to be put on the list for certain roses. Don't use your credit card on their site.

    last modified: 4 years ago

    Biff, sure...it's Nicole@hortico.com

    :) :)

Which ones are you interested in? :)

houzz://user/rosecanadian thanks for posting Hortico’s list. I saw a few of them on their site about 2 weeks ago, but they are not there now.
I’m interested in Imogen, The Ingenious Mr. Fairchild and Susan Williams-Ellis and I did email them, waiting to hear back.
Any particular advice about those 3?

B maggie, I had 2 Imogens back east in my NY garden (zone 5B). They survived winter well, but he was the thorniest rose I've ever seen in person and his pretty flowers fell apart right after opening. Was always bummed out because it seemed like a vigorous plant, shooting up tall arms about 4 ft tall in only it's 1st year in the ground, but the flowers never lasted on the bush. I've read Mr. Fairchild has a great scent.

I had Portrait a few years ago, but it died when my daughter left the garage door open all day in winter. I would recommend that one...I loved it!! I'm also going to try Margaret Merril. I hope it's a good rose. :) And, of course, the much loved Chandos Beauty.

    @rosecanadian chandos beauty,

@rosecanadian if Rogue Valley Roses ships to canada they have Margaret Merril right now. https://roguevalleyroses.com/rose/margaret-merril/ @oursteelers 8B PNW Linda at Long Ago Roses carries Ascot as does Pam at Angel Gardens. I'd email both to see if either will carry them.

Sadly Long Ago doesn’t ship to Washington:(

Biff - yes, the incomparable Chandos Beauty!! I hope you get one. :) :)

Aaron - thanks, but I'm going to go through Hortico for Margaret Merril. :) Have you grown it?

I have one from Heirloom growing in the front of my house. If Long Ago doesn't, maybe check with Angel Gardens? Sometimes Linda puts roses on eBay--usually later in the summer--including Ascot, though they go for a pretty penny. I feel like shipping restrictions like that might not be allowed on eBay? I'd check to be sure but that might be an option also.

Just as a plug for Margaret Merril, I had her growing in my front yard next to the sidewalk. I moved her to a location further back in the front yard, and a couple of days later, a walker in my neighborhood knocked on my door and wanted to know what happened to Margaret! It was this woman's favorite in my garden. I love her as well :-D

Susan - oh that is so good to hear about Margaret Merrill!!! I'm going to get her for sure! :) :)

    Reminiscent Coral

Kristine - oh my word!!! Your RC is gorgeous!!! Wowza!! I'm glad to see that you love your Valencia. I need to find one again. What do you think about its fragrance? Mine didn't have any, when I grew it.

    last modified: 3 months ago

    Carol,

I just recently had a Reminiscent Coral delivered through Home Depot online. It has opened its second bloom and what a beauty it is. It's scheduled to go inground ASAP. No fragrance detected, but since getting a near hospitalization Covid attack in December, my taste and scent senses are on strike due to the Covid. I may discover that it has some fragrance soon enough. Reminiscent Coral appears to be a shortie going by how short the laterals are at 8", with a bush height of 14" so far. This is in its 2 gal. pot, of course.

I predict Reminiscent Coral will become a top 10 favorite in time, especially if its black spot resistance is excellent. The A.R.T.S. organization places Reminiscent Coral on its trial winner list.

    Moses.

Carol, not sure about fragrance on Valencia. When it blooms I will check it out. I have a hard time bending over those shorties for a sniff test lol. I would think that Reminiscent coral would have fragrance because scent is in the name. I will check it out .

Moses - Wonderful that you got a Reminiscent Coral rose!! And even better that it has excellent black spot resistance. Sounds like Covid really did a number on you. I'm sorry about your loss of taste (that, to me, would be terrible) and smell. I hope you get those back. It sure does sound like a great rose, though. :)

Kristine - lol, I haven't been sleeping well...not falling asleep until 5 or 6 a.m. or I would have thought a bit more about the "scent" in Reminiscent. :) :) I don't want you to have to get on your hands and knees to sniff a rose for me. :) That's okay. :)

Elestrial - Versigny!! I'd love to find that rose. :)

Carol, Reminiscent does indeed have a lovely fragrance. I need to gry more pictures because it is loaded with blooms

Yes, take more pictures. :) :) Thanks for checking the fragrance. I'll say yes to this rose if I see it offered here in Canada. :)

Interesting..when I started out with roses..(1st roses 74..Arizona and Sunset Jubilee) but later with serious collecting..90s and 00s.. everyone seemed to be collecting old world roses..Collecting modern teas just wasn't done..how styles change.

Kitty - I seem to recall people having trouble with rust with Rose de Rescht, so it may not be a good variety in the PNW for you. You have great looking OGRs. :) :) I think I'll stay away from own-root roses. I can get by without them. I think that their roots probably couldn't reach down to the bottom of the pot to get the water that was there. But that's okay, I don't need own-roots. :) Your Yolande de Aragon is your favorite rose...that's a beauty!!

Vaporvac, yes, I spray. Thrips are really bad right now.

RdR here is great. I bet Kitty would love it.

    Sheila & Carol,

I thought Caol may like Rose de Rescht. I think she’s beautiful & I read reviews that she is very disease resistabt so no rust. As far as own roots go, they grow very large including roots, but itvtakes at least 3 years. First year they are ysually small & only growca little. 2nd year theyvstsrt growibg. 3rd year they are vigorous growers.

However, since Carol has a shorter sunnyvsesson, it tskes awhile forvown roots to really grow. Grafted rosrs can be vigorous growers first year.

Another note-If Carol nurtures some OGRs own-roots in pots a few years and then she could plant them outside or enjoy them in pots. They are the most hardy roses in cold climates. It took 3 years to really see my La Reine, Mme Dubost, Yolande dA, & Mme Isaac Pereirre take off. However they are established now and growing really well-own roots.

However, now I’m going to uproot them & transplant them to pots.. No doubt, my roses will need time to recover.

Presently, it sounds like Carol has many new wonderful roses to enjoy!

Just an FYI, I’m in the PNW and don’t have a rust problem with Rose de Rescht. It’s a wonderful rose here!

Okay, lol, I stand corrected. Rose de Rescht is not rust prone. :) :) Good to have actual growers comment on this.

Having ADHD, I tend to expect roses to perform well quickly. I've gotten rid of roses that I wish I had kept. My fault.

Top 10 that I currently grow or have grown in the past (moved 5 years ago, and slowly creating new garden)

Coupe d'Hebe (Only once blooming, but this is my platonic ideal of a rose. I love the form and fragrance, and it is tough and hardy in spite of neglect)

    Madame Hardy

    Madame Plantier

    Lyda Rose

    Charles de Mills

    Quietness

    The Generous Gardener

    Little White Pet

    Cardinal Richelieu

    Basye's Blueberry

Honorable Mention: My 4 year old Marianne is getting big, and puts out a huge spring flush. However, it balls badly sometimes, and sometimes the blooms open somehow a bit shriveled or withered as though the petals were already worn out by the time it manages to open fully. I want to love it, but it spring in Missouri doesn't seem to suit it. I still hope it will hit its stride, because when the flowers are good they are sooooo good, and it is the healthiest, hardiest rose.

Top 10 that I don't grow due to climate/zone/space/availability, but which have captured my imagination:

    Gloire de Dijon

    Lady Hillingdon

    Rambling Rector

    Christine Hélène

    Lillian Gibson

    Cramoisi Supérieur

    Climbing Cécile Brünner

    Eden/Eden, climbing

    Russelliana

    Mutabilis
