I would venture to say that there are no steps below this staircase. But, then again, the drawers appear to be shallow in depth. Thus, if the staircase case is wider than 36" (assuming the staircase is very grand in width since we cannot see the full frontal), then the staircase could return below to a lower level. All in all, great use of dead space!
