I had read the first one before, but not the second one.

I have never grown anything from seed so am really nervous.

You have nothing to lose. I'm growing some Cuties or Halos (I don't remember which) mandarins that are normally seedless and the seedlings are quite healthy and nice (3) little trees in their own right. Been about a year and a hald and they are pretty full with natural short nodes and branching. Although they may take years to fruit if ever, they ae quite robust and attractive. Be prepared to give them maximum light and heat (grow light) and good starter soil for their roots. Keep your nodes tight.

You'll probably stop hyperventilating by the time they actually bear fruit. Plan to wait for 10 to 15 years on this one! But seedling citrus can be fun to grow.

If you want fruit any time soon, you can always buy a grafted Sumo for not all that much money, depending on where you live.

The fewer restrictions placed on the tree's vigorous growth, the sooner the trees will transition to the reproductive phase and being fruiting. The earliest fruit I've gotten on my trees has been in the second year, going on the third year. This occurred at just around 9' high with the top deflected about 110 degrees to the side. Under suboptimal conditions it can take much longer. Genetics also play an important role in the timing of the transition to the fruiting phase. In general, limes and kumquats are early fruiting. Mandarins (tangerines) are intermediate, oranges, and especially grapefruits take the longest.

This tree was 31 months old when I discovered it already had 4 fruit set in the upper branches. This early fruiting was a pleasant surprise, as it's siblings haven't fruited at this point.

I've had mandarins bloom at around 8 years. Oranges and grapefruits take much longer. I had a grapefruit hybrid approach 10 years at about 14' high -- still no blooms. Sumo also has some orange in its parentage. It is supposed to be mostly polyembryonic, so chances are very high you'll get clones...eventually.
