Update on Health Issues

last modified: 4 years ago

DH, who has advanced prostate cancer, has been sifting through hundreds of clinical trials to find one that would improve his chances for long term survival and fits his disease profile. This past Friday he was accrpted for an NIH trial that consists of two types of immunotherapy given prior to surgery. We will be going to DC for two days four times every two weeks starting December 13th. In the ninth week (early February) he will have the surgery at Bethesda. This has the potential to increase his survival chances by 10%, which is significant.

In between these trips we have Christmas and my mom moves down here in mid January to a house we bought last week. Her condo is sold (closing next week) and there is a lot of painting to oversee as well as lights to change and new bedroom carpet on order. Tomorrow we are getting banking and the rest of the utilities sorted. it's a busy time! But, thankfully, mom will be moved and (kind of) settled by tue time DH has his surgery and I am needed around the ckock at home— but if she does need anything she will be only a mile away!

edited to correct “immunotherapy and chemotherapy;” this first round is two types of immunotherapy. Chemo will come later depending on the pathology results after surgery.

This is very good news and "hopeful". That can put a smile on your face and the fact that you got your dear Mom in the right place. May the holidays bring you less stress and more smiles. God bless both of you. Hope is my favorite word.

So glad you were able to find a treatment plan you are both comfortable with .. and that you were able to lay out a plan to move your mom closer. Having your mom so close will take some weight off your mind so you can focus on DH and his recovery.

Sending much love to you and your family.

So glad that there seems to be a good chance for your DH! Now you can get on with what needs to be done!

It is quite a lot of work having your mother and your DH needing your attention so very glad your DH is able to fight for himself as well. Perhaps you might consider meals on wheels or something for a short period of time for yourself and your family. Or help with whatever seems to be just one thing too many to do.

Big hugs to you and your family. You are in my thoughts.

I rarely read this forum these days, but clicked on it today and saw your post. Don't know your research or if this applies to your DH's case, but I know 2 men who have been treated here and are now cancer free. One traveled from NJ and rented in the area during treatment.

Thanks very much everyone! This is the first good news we’ve had since he was disgnosed on October.

To answer the questions: Roarah, they don’t allow people to get the injections off site, unfortunstely. Chispa, DH has a very aggressive tumor that can’t be treated at this stage with radistion alone, as that clinic does. For some people and tumors radiation is the best option, but DH isn't one of them. Robo, I have bought plane tickets but don't yet have a hotel reserved. Tomorrow i will call the coordinating nurse to find the best / closest accomodation to the clinic. We only expect to stay one night each time.

Tonight I made up a list on paper for my mother of things that have to be done for the move. It was a little daunting for her. i thought about a similar list i should make for all the things i have to do for the next two months and decided to keep it on workflowy, my list program that allows one to look at just a portion of the list at a time. I’m not sure I have the fortitude to look at every sub-heading…. It looks way better collapsed than expanded 😳

Best wishes to your DH and all your family. Your update was appreciated and encouraging. Please remember when you are taking care of everyone else to take care of yourself as well. I am sure your kids would be happy to help as needed, so don’t be hestiant to ask. Having been first the young adult child and later the parent in similar circumstances, I can tell you that the kids would appreciate the opportunity to help. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Do take advantage of assistance where you can. It sounds like you are getting everything very organized -- just remember that also makes it easier to delegate as well as to do.

I'm so glad that you and your husband have been able to use your professional wisdom, skills and experience to find a treatment plan that offers hope and makes you feel comfortable. I participated in a national clinical trial 21 years ago that I believe saved my life. The trial ended early when results indicated that the treatment offered a significant advantage to those who were randomized to it. The treatment is now a first line treatment. Wishing you all the best.

It is so fortunate that your husband was accepted into a trial at NIH. It is a wonderful medical and research facility staffed with some of the best minds in science.

You will find the locale safe and very convenient to hotels and restaurants. I assume you will be flying into Reagan/National Airport, so a short drive to hotel and short drive to NIH.

Glad you formulated lists; it is less stressful for the to do's to be on paper or an app than whirling around in your head.

Warm wishes for a smooth treatment and successful outcome.
