I agree, I would paint to match the rest of the house, and I would replace the rugs. Yes, I would pull those draperies. I would however replace them, with something that isnt so fussy and outdated looking. Your table and chairs and hutch, are gorgeous, but, they really do not look great in your house. Your house has a more modern vibe to it, and the dining set is a bit gothic.

Thing is every element of this room [and nearby] has to be figured into wall color -- that's a huge deal. Which walls you mean? ... any at all beyond the columns?

If you really want to update the place, make a coherent design for everything that will include a paint color.

Updating includes changing the curtains, the dining table and chairs, the chandelier, the china closet, for starters.

Why not go through some rooms here on Houzz and pick some you like, and consider working with an interior designer.

Thank you loobab. I have thought about the rooms for some time and have a list of what I like and don't like. Yes, the DR furniture and lighting has to go in the DR. I thought stone look vinyl plank flooring for the lower level and new carpet up the stairs and second floor. I had tried to get the woman we worked with a few years ago but haven't had any luck there. I have contacted a few and will see how it goes. At this point, I do not want to hire someone who wants to redo everything, as in just turn it over for them to do. Thank you all. I'll keep making inquiries.
