tips for move-in week?

Moving into our first house next week! Anyone have any tips for how to settle in? Deep clean before move in day? Ours will mostly be boxes, don’t have much furniture yet. What’s good timing to get carpets professionally cleaned? Before you move all boxes in and set them aside so you’re not in and out? Very excited! Thanks!

Yes, clean before you move in anything. Just give yourself an extra day or two. I know that's difficult when you're excited, but cleaning and carpets come first.

Thank you!! Taking 2 days for a deep clean, professional carpet cleaner on second day, moving in third … the move in is a little rushed but what we had to do with limited time off. Thank you!

After the cleaning the next advice would be to be sure that you have some tools handy - a short stepladder, a couple of different sizes and kinds (flat and phillips) screwdrivers,, a mallet or hammer, dust brush and dustpan, some rags or dishtowels, sponges, a little dish soap -- all to assist in putting things away - I always find some things that were packed but do need a little cleaning before I want to put them anywhere. Borrow the tools if you can, if yours are all packed away, or buy inexpensive ones if you don't own them.

Also some of those slider type thingys that go under heavy items to prevent dents or wear in carpet/flooring. Cheap at most big box hardware stores, and can go under your heaviest boxes to help with unpacking, then under your furniture when you get it.

And get your kitchen unpacked - you can live out of boxes in any other room!

Be cateful about leaving cardboard boxes on the carpeting. If there’s even a small amount of moisture left in the carpeting from cleaning, it could set up a bad situation between the carpet and the boxes. congratulations on your new home.

I agree with others: kitchen and bedroom are priorities.

I've moved 11 times in 22 years, in the midst of moving right now. I would not deep clean before I move in, but I have a lot of furniture and boxes that expel dirt and dust as will the movers (who are going to use the bathroom while there, too).

I'm vacuuming the floors today so I can get the bulk of dirt off the new build floor before the movers add more and before we lay down the master bed rug. I'll clean this upcoming weekend after we've unpacked the majority of items.

I'd steam clean carpets if there isn't going to be a lot of traffic on them during moving day.

Yes, set up your bed first so you can sleep for the upcoming work (and houses are very a lot of work).

I have moved so many times before finally thanks to the Grace of God, having a own home no. I labeled all boxes in colour stick it notes with the names of each person and leave each outside or to one side of their room. At the new house before moving in I place the same colour stick it notes on the bedroom doors of family members ( or dining room, living room etc,) in new house, so when moving time comes , ask the movers ( or family members) to put the boxes under their matching door colours . That way everyone can start unpacking ( if old enough) and help.

I clean before moving in, the needed bedrooms, the kitchen, bathrooms needed ( not guest one or basement ones) , put towels in, the necessities , same for kitchen, as these places are the most important needed when you are tired, want to eat or shower. Once the settling is done in these rooms, take your time gradually do the rest of house.

In regards to carpets, I would steam clean them before moving if possible, believe me you really won’t want to do while moving in, you will be tired.

All your spices, cutlery, keep in cut down boxes to make them accessible so you can use them while transferring and to just put on countertop in kitchen until you can organized them.

A couple of things not mentioned are to have at-the-ready: rolls of toilet paper; rolls of paper towel; and light bulbs... if needed.

+ one on the toilet paper. Don't ask me how I know.

As an experienced veteran with six moves under my belt, the DoD hires the lowest common denominator in movers.

I've had four movers that I've picked or we're provided by corporate - light years better.

Keep a stack of post it notes and a note pad handy to start the fix it list. Document with pictures (and take a few for memories too)

Two boxes. One for master bedroom filled with fresh linens, pillows and covers to make up the bed, fresh towels for a shower. Second box (I usually use a laundry basket for this) for kitchen with paper towels, scrubby pad, toilet paper, large trash bag, dish soap, dishwasher soap, laundry soap, screwdriver, hammer, remote control, kitchen knife, coffee maker, coffee, corkscrew, paper cups, and bottle of wine.

Pack your suitcase as if you were traveling with spare clothes and toiletries. This should get you two or three days of practical comfort in order to start unpacking boxes and setting up furniture.

Are you going to have to live there the day you move, or is there some extra time?
