Flat front Vermont colonial

Hello! I am looking for advice on how to update our Vermont colonial. New windows and stain are necessary in 2022. We were thinking black windows, off-white trim, green stain. Our home is prominent on a mountain and we’d like to stay true to the Vermont natural look! We have a triangle pediment and are totally open to adding a portico and wrap porch with an all season room on the side. Your Houzzer help is so appreciated!!

So hard to tell in the snow but why the black windows with a dark green stain? They cost more than white and IMO work best with either brick or a more modern farmhouse look.

I honestly think the place where the home is is secondary to what you want the look to be.I would not do areally dark green for the siding

Thank you for your response! We did have the wi does quoted and the white or black is the same cost with Marvin Windows. We like the modern look of black but are open to white. We’d like to stray from “classic colonial”. Green is our favorite color but we’re open to any stain color :)

This photo is the front of the house for us. We enter through the green door. As you can see, it’s a lot of wall to color!

I like the color it is and would paint the entire front door, sidelights, and storm if one all the same color. Nice house and love the traditional look and simplicity. Add larger coach lights to the front too.

White trim would look good with green siding.

I like the color it is too. I agree about larger lights on the front. I also think it is really lacking any landscape interest, so I might have a landscaper come and develop a plan that goes well on your style house. Its a beautiful house, just the way it is, but, landscaping will do so much for it. No green paint, and black windows are my very favorite, but, not on your house. White is so much better look for your house.

I'm surprised at the lack of love for the green paint. I think that would look great, although it would make the house recede into the woods.

I also think black windows could work if the trim matched the house color, as here:

I'd do a forest green stain for both the siding and the trim, and perhaps a bright red front door. Saltbox colonials are meant to be simple in design, so I'd add the punch with the contrasting door color. Will look great in your woodsy setting.

I really like the brown and would do a deep red trim.

We’re starting to like the brown now too! And after meeting with a painter today, believe we may have to stick with a dark color (brown? darkest green? blue/black-ish?) since we’d prefer to stain and not paint. Leaning toward white windows with white trim. Once all that is done- I’ve got a landscape vision :)

Stick with brown and use Crisp Romaine for trim.
