Without seeing any leaves this is going to be a tall order to identify. My only guess would be a Eucalyptus from the peeling bark but that is most likely a million miles off.

The resin/oil could be a sign that your tree is being attacked by the Eucalyptus Borer, which is also unnaturally in Hawaii?

So this was on a trail I was hiking. It was leaking like this after a heavy rain storm. I was wondering if maybe a branch cracked and caused this leak.

It looks to me like a long slice of bark on the tree trunk has been removed. That massive wound or any wound above can leak. Anybody crafting things locally with eucalyptus bark?

Eucalyptus has a ton of uses, medicine, tea, fiber, dye, lumber, It is not a first choice for tapa cloth that I know of, but a section of bark removed like that would indicate some purpose. Was the side of the tree trunk actually scalped or is that just resin dripping down the trunk? I can't really tell from the picture

I'm not sure it looked to be dripping rather than being scalped. I didn't look around to much though.
