Engineered wood flooring underlayment?

Do engineered floors need cork underlayment? Our house is on a raised foundation. One of our subcontractors recommends 1/2” plywood installed throughout to make the floors level, and a 1/4-1/2” of cork for soundproofing. The floors we purchased are 9/16”. Our ceilings aren’t that tall, so I’d like to limit adding too much height if possible.

Could we get away with only using a 3/8” plywood base to level the floors?

Our floors are the Diamond W Flooring Valaire French White Oak Plank in the color Rochelle.
