Am I seeing the canes and leaves of a Wichurana rambler?

I'm thinking not, because it doesn't have that sort of scent. But the description of Rosa odorata var. erubescens fits. And that rose is native to NW China -- Yunnan province. And I think the Lijiang rose was found in that area.

Thanks for the photo, Jeri. For whatever reason it's blooming, the early reminder of Spring is welcome! I'm going to have to drag out my "Roses" by Phillips and Rix and see if there are any good photos of this one. It's time for more eye candy anyway, since we're getting a real taste of winter the next few days.

John, you won't find photos of this one. There are just a couple of images of Lijiang Road (See pg. 48-49) but not NEARLY good enough for identification.

And MY rose, so-called "Phillips & Rix Pink China Climber" was apparently collected on a separate trip to China, and left with someone in San Francisco due to ?customs? issues. (Whence it made its way to the Sacramento City Cemetery, which is where I got it.)

And I, unfortunately, have never seen 'Lijiang Road'.

Welllll, rats, lol. I still need to dig out my copy of "Roses", because today is dreary, damp, and COLD. I'll have to settle for your photos of the rose, which just means you need to take lots more, lol.

Maybe tomorrow I'll walk down there. It'll be warmer (A LOT warmer!) and dry. There's some other things I need to look at, as well.

I sure wish I could see side-by-side images of this rose, and 'Lijiang Road' to see how they match, and how they differ.

But in the meantime, it's fun to look at the China-like blooms of Phillips & Rix . . .

Wow! These rare antiques give me goosebumps. Thank you for the photos and the thread! I think I’ll take my Phillips and Rix book off the shelf and read it again, too. It’s been awhile. I recently passed along a pile of garden books to various friends during a deep house clean-up, but somehow I still have around 150?! Hmmmm. Carol
