Gap between wall and mantle

Hello. We were hoping to fill in the gaps between our mantle and wall… we got most of it however towards the bottom the gap is fair large. I’m wondering what are suggestions on filling out this hole?

Backer rod. Push it in, caulk on top.

I agree with backer rod and caulk. I just posted this on another thread but I love the Alex Plus Clear Paintable caulk. Somehow the clear performs much better long-term than the white paintable (that tends to yellow or get dusty)

If you didn't want to do that, you could cut a piece of trim as tall as the baseboard and apply it vertically, maybe quarter round or something else dependent on the size. Then caulk the smaller gap that would remain above.

It's a beautiful fireplace and I just love that original tile. Glad you are able to keep it.

Ahh I wish I had posted this before I purchased the caulk. I ended up with the Alex Plus acrylic latex plus silicone in white. Duly noted on clear for the future.
