Have you considered a hallway runner? Maybe in a patterned darker color?

It appears much too small to me. What is to the right as you face the inside of the door? I would try to get a rug that almost fills the floor space in the door "alcove" area.

I agree with jo it looks small. You have a vent there on the floor so a runner ( 3x8ish) might be a good option or something to really fit the alcove but not cover the vent. There is no colour - I'd suggest anything to add some contrast. Don't be afraid it is a rug you can change it up if you need to.

If I do a runner I have no idea if I should do 1 or 2 my hall is really long

it's too small. (mainly because everything else around it is plain)

And that is not a 3x5. 2x3 maybe.

If you want to use that smaller rug, then try decorating that empty wall on the side with something like this.

Thank you for your ideas. Super helpful. I am going to paint that door. I was going to put some 18x20 frames with black and white family photos on the wall to the right. I just need to know a rug size that I could use there that won’t look wonky. I agree that I need to pick a better color too

why not find a bench, maybe some hooks for jackets, but use the longer side of the wall.

do a little board and batten above it if you like for hooks, cubbies for storage

Or, just get a simple bench with a mirror or piece of art above it

You have a very nice entry but I feel the rug you have, no matter how it's placed, is undersized. I vote for a runner that will take you eye down the hallway, an entry table along the wall to the right and in the little nook you currently have a cabinet and mirror, add a bench and some art above it.

if the latter, a console, place for keys might be nice.

This is a perfect idea for an inset wall. Get a piece of wood, live edge, and go wall-to wall with it.

do a nice mirror or art above it. pendant optional. You could even paint that wall a dark contrasting color, or do wallpaper.

hard to photoshop because the photo you posted is at an angle. basically that wall w/the red arrow, and do a floating shelf all the way across.

2X10 or larger would look nice

you could do a shorter piece if you like. I just think floating it completely within the inset portion looks good

you could do some nice baskets beneath it. or, get a couple of ottomans to complete the look

I love all these ideas! So pretty! I don’t have art. Like I said I was thinking of putting 18 x 20 framed pictures up on the right wall. I also have the end of the hall that I am confused about to! Because their is a big blank space that I need to fill with some wonderful art. I also have that black console table and photo on the wall. The only thing I can’t seem to get is what size I would need for a runner? Anyone do phone decorating? Or in Chicago?

Kristy, get some painters tape and use it. try taping out a larger size that you think looks good and is proportional. Now measure it.

something like this would be nice in your recessed wall. just use a big mirror and copy what they've done here. you can then hang your art piece on the wall by the door.

I'd say go for a rug that is a bit wider and a foot or two longer than this one^

look at picures of long hallways and look at decor. a lot of them have 2-3 lights if it's really long.

can you do a wall treatment or color like this on the wall at the end? a little table, artwork?

For the runner is their a rule? I put the tape but it’s not exactly center to my door. Or would I be better off with with something other then a runner. That little nook is terrible to design too 😭 I stopped the tape at where the mud room entrance is

no rule. the normal runner sizes are anywhere between 24"-32" wide, and come in 6-12' lengths.

the other option is to have a rug that stops at the first wall, and just covers the portion by the door. a little bit bigger that what you have

I like your length. it's fine to push it over to the vent. you will prob have to take the width between wall and the molding on the other wall.

Beth always gives awesome , beautiful ideas ! ! Look for a 30 inch wide runner. I found some on Etsy. Remember a rug pad so no one slips and protect the floor. Have fun!

it's fine to offset it from the door. so just look for a 30" like stacey mentioned, or a bit narrower, and run it down that spot with the blue tape. You don't want it right on the molding, so whatever size you have to get to put an inch or two between the rug/wall molding, get that size.

not really. I think it impededs that portion right there.

I'd get a cool looking console or wood piece or something at the very end against that wall.

I don't think you have the height for these types of lights, but something else would work. you could paint the wall at the end a dark color
