Yes. First, it is never suggested to fertilize something newly planted. The plants are already under stress from transplanting and will not assimilate the added nutrients properly. Second, it is also never recommended to amend an individual planting hole, Use the indigenous soil only....what comes out of the hole is all that goes back in. Use any amendments instead as a top dressing.

Finally, fertilizer spikes of any kind are hugely inefficient. They concentrate nutrients to a specific point rather than distribute them throughout the root zone where the feeder roots can properly access them. If you have them, you can use them but grind them up first and then sprinkle on the soil surface around the drip line.

But wait to do so until next spring.

Yep!! The tree roots will not stay within the original planting hole anyway so what is the point of amending it? It affects water percolation and drainage, doesn't help with establishment and can actually impede or delay proper establishment, so just don't do it :-)

But I would take the time to remove all the weeds, grass and other stuff growing there and then mulch well after planting to make sure they don't immediately overtake the new young tree. The attention to weeding and mulching (and watering) in its first year is far more important to the long-term health of the tree than any amending or fertilizing will accomplish!
