Suddenly slippery floors

In our house, we have wood floors, a slate kitchen floor, and stairs that are painted. We dry-mop three times a week with a microfiber mop/pad. We wet-mop every six weeks. On the wood, we use Method wood floor cleaner, and on the slate and painted stairs, we use a solution of water with a little bit of dish soap. This has been working fine. Then about a month or so ago, all our floors suddenly became very slippery. It's on the wood, slate, and painted stairs. We haven't changed anything about how we're cleaning or behaving in the house. Any ideas on what could be causing this and how to fix?

"We haven't changed anything about how we're cleaning"

Something had to have changed or used accidently as that is only thing that could explain all three completely different surfaces becoming slippery at the same time.

Well that's the thing---if we had changed something, I'd know what the culprit is :) We don't have a housekeeper and we do all the cleaning ourselves, so we are in control of what's being used.

Maybe a build up of the cleaning solutions on the floors?

Can be from air sprays or plug in freshners.

Cooking grease buildup, soap build up, sun screen, lotion, body oil, etc. What happens after your regular cleaning?

Any change to how you launder the microfiber pads? Added a new fabric softener or dryer sheets?? Do you wear shoes in the house? Live where there is snow and ice where you could have gotten de-icer spread on roads and parking lots on your shoes, or pets' paws and brought it inside?

It's a stretch, but have you changed your foot wear? Maybe going from bare feet (which grip) to socks, etc.

I had the same problem with my hardwood floors suddenly becoming very slippery. After much cleaning and searching for the cause, I realized the only new items to our household was a set of kitchen anti-fatigue floor mats. I searched online and found some obscure discussions about a super slick coating on some anti-fatigue floor mats. So we had unknowingly been tracking this slick substance all over our house in our house shoes. Plus, the closer to the kitchen, the more slippery were the floors. We immediately rid the kitchen of the mats, washed the floors numerous times, and cleaned the house shoes.

Some great suggestions here. Any chance that your usual detergents / cleaning products have changed formulation?

Many months after this question. The same happened to us but on vinyl flooring in the kitchen, bathrooms and hallway. Turned out to be the 7 pairs of new socks I bought. Some sort of dressing used in the manufacture of them. Gradually got worse over a week until my other half slipped on the floor. Lots of cleaning later, it seems to have gone.

Floor cleaners are waxy, i stopped using them as everyone was slipping so just used basic disinfectant and water , not even soap. Works fine now.

We bought a pet bed, a runner rug, and an anti fatigue mat from Costco and all left the hardwood so slippery, which then tracked everywhere. I can’t walk in the house without slipping and straining my back. I’m still trying to get it off the wood.

We had the same phenomenon happen to us. The only difference in our life was that I started running humidifiers. I can't think how that's making the floors slippery, though, because we use distilled water, which means the machines shouldn't be depositing minerals or anything like that to make the floors slick.

Do you use dryer sheets in your cloths dryer? we experienced the same thing and it returned after cleaning. I found tha Simple Green cleaner did a good job of removing the waxy oily substance we stopped using dryer sheets the problem went away. when we started using the sheets the problem returned. we no longer use dryer sheets and the floors are fine

I found the same thing going on to- it was the floor wax cleaner, it stays on a long while. It can transfer from your feet to other floors. Don’t use wax or floor cleaners, just a water and disinfectant only. Even soap leaves a shiny mess. Disinfectant and water also great for windows with a micro cloth, no need for window spray too (except for mirrors).
