We're used to separate bidet and w.c. But not in the nosebleed price range! Anything Kohler or AS fills the bill as far as reliability and repairability.

I've had clients insist on TOTO. But last month I heard an outspoken home improvements contractor dismiss TOTO as good for five years, then the innards are shot.

It seems like a 'luxury' kitchen range would be a better investment, or at least 'luxury' toilet paper.

If I had the space, I'd not be getting an all-in-one unit, no matter how high tech. I'd have a separate bidet where I would not need to worry about splash-back. Ick! Additionally, separate bidets make it easier to wash from the back OR front -- especially important when you're female.

So, when I do my bathroom reno this year, there will be a separate water supply to a hand-held, warm water bidet sprayer. At least I'll be able to control exactly where the water goes.

Regarding the toilet, it will be a wall-mounted Caroma.

The Toto Neorest is probably the most luxurious toilet on the market currently. FWIW the top of the line is installed in the Kardashian homes. I am not espousing them as experts who should be devotedly emulated, but they do own luxury homes and are constantly renovating and remodeling with no money spared. You can question their taste but the Neorest is actually a beautiful toilet.

I have the top of the line Toto washlet which has most of the Neorest functionality and my Toto toilet has Connect+ so it is pretty sleek looking as it only has the single hose which is standard for toilets. I believe that the Neorest has no visible connections.

I have been using it for more than 3 years since my remodel and there have been no problems at all. It is completely maintenance free and the wet down function along with the special finish means that it practically cleans itself.

I love my Toto washlet and honestly if you are planning to spend that amount for a toilet I don't think the possible cost of repair would be any kind of significant factor.

ETA A separate bidet wouldn’t be functional for me because I would find it inconvenient to hop off the toilet to waddle over to a separate bidet. The top of the line Toto washiets have a function for the front areas with a wide wash 😂🤫 which is theoretically for female needs. I think the separate bidet is based on older European lifestyies where people didn’t bathe as frequently. If i really needed to hose down the nether regions more than a washlet, I couid just as easily use the handheld shower head in my walk in shower but I am just a vulgar philistine American 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

What makes a toilet 'luxury' and how does one go about determining which is 'BEST'? Should diet or the results of the latest colonoscopy be considered in the opinions of those commenting/judging? The toilet seat, which is interchangeable, could throw off the evaluations drastically. You may have to go to you BEST luxury plumbing supply store and try them all out.

Remember, a straight flush is great but a royal flush is even better.

I agree with those who ask, What is BEST? I personally would choose

- a one-piece design for ease of cleaning.

- standard height /not raised -- because I am very short.

- a bidet seat /not a separate item -- because staying in place is easier than moving to a second spot, even if they're right next to one another.

- efficient flushing mechanism /strong enough to "take care of business".

- stick to plain white -- do not be tempted to branch out into whatever color seems cool today.

I think you can more easily add "luxury" in the area AROUND the toilet:

- ample space to move to /away from the toilet. No cramped closets.

- toilet paper holder that doubles as a grab bar -- they make attractive designs now, and eventually you (or someone else) will want them.

- a sink adjacent to the toilet. Again, a good reason to avoid cramped closets.

- closed storage near the toilet. Everyone needs to store toilet paper, ladies need to store sanitary supplies, and elderly people often have unique medical needs near the toilet (my grandparents did, though they were very embarrassed by it).

- space for a small trash can.

- good lighting. Ideally, I'd like to see an outlet "up high" so you could hang a string of pretty lights, and I'd prefer a light directly above the toilet with a dimmer switch.

- if you're going to want a bidet seat, you'll need an electrical outlet behind the toilet.

- I'd like to see tile behind the toilet. It'd be easier to keep clean, and it'd never need painting. If the tile could be "coved" by the floor, all the better.

- natural light.

- pretty colors, artwork, a plant.

I agree so much with this! Especially the points about easy-to-clean surfaces:

• tile on the wall behind the toilet
• cove joint between floor and wall
• skirted toilet so there aren't any nooks
• quick release toilet seat

You might also want to include between-the-studs storage for the toilet brush

We have a Toto Nexus with S550+ washlet with auto flush in our guest bathroom. I believe Helen has the same set-up in her bathroom.

Like Helen, we haven't had any issues with our Toto in the 18 mos it's been in use. It truly does almost clean itself with very little additional effort on our part!

Note there are a few consumables like a charcoal filter that should be replaced if you purchase the washlet.

Oh, and we have Corian baseboards with coved corners behind our Nexus toilet. We love the coved corners since we steam mop our floors.

Toto has evidently introduced a self flushing toilet in conjunction with its top of the line washlet.

I have the Toto washlet S550e which is the contemporary style which looks like a reguar toilet seat and has all of the functionality except self flushing. Alas I bought before the self flushing option was available.

Although reaching for the lever isn't really a hardship I would most likely have gotten this additonal option if it had been available when I got mine in 2018. I am sure I would have gotten use to it just as I got used to the self rising toilet lid which I originally thought was a bit ridiculous and now really appreciate.

I think self rising and self flushing in a powder room would be great options even if guests didn't use the bidet functions.

TOTO’s new auto-flush feature is available on the Aimes, Legato, Nexus (1.28 gpf and 1.0 gpf) and Aquia IV Dual Flush WASHLET+ One-Piece Toilets. It is also be available on the Nexus (1.28 gpf and 1.0 gpf), Connelly and Aquia IV Dual Flush (Standard and Universal Heights) two-piece models.

Obviously these are not "necessary" functions but so long as a homeowner can afford them, they are just like any other upgraded feature which enhances one's end user experience :-).

@Helen, I'm pretty sure you can simply purchase the auto flush module and add it to your existing washlet! It's a small part which can be added to your washlet. It also includes a replacement part for your remote. Now that we've had it, we can't live without the auto flush feature! ᾒ3

@Julie K - It seemed like you needed one of the newer toilets that had that feature and interfaced with the toilet. But I can call Toto customer service to verify.

I'm looking for a luxury toilet as well and came across this thread. I went to a Kohler showroom where I saw the Veil as well as the more expensive Eir "intelligent toilets" (that's what the salesperson called them!) I wouldn't advise getting the Eir. At the risk of being too graphic, I went into the bathroom (where they had an operating Eir) and noticed that there was some tissue in the toilet left by the previous occupant. Having lived in CA I thought perhaps that person was conserving water and didn't flush. But the salesperson informed later that that's a problem with the toilet, the flush doesn't remove tissue left at the front of the bowl. I went back and tested this, placing some tissue at the front of the bowl. Neither the partial flush nor full flush removed the tissue. I found this design flaw pretty surprising (and kind of gross). The salesperson said that someone has to go in there and "freshen things up" after someone uses the bathroom. He also said that they previously had a Veil (floor mount) installed and never had a problem with that. The Veil wall mount may be a different story as it has a different bowl design.

I have a Toto Neorest 550H that's about 4 years old and works fine, although I had to adjust the auto open motion sensor with stickers (!) because the toilet would open whenever you walked in front of it from 3-4' away. The Neorests are all kind of big and bulky to my eye, I wish Toto would come up with a slimmer/sleeker design.

I also have a 10 year old INAX Satis "intelligent toilet" that has been working great all these years. I just learned that Lixil, the parent company of INAX, also owns American Standard, and the American Standard DXV AT200 toilet is using the INAX toilet technology, so I hope to find out more info on that since I'm very happy with my INAX Satis. It has more features than the Neorest 550.

Just went on the Kohler site because I have a Kohler Veil toilet ... but not that one!

Price is down on the fancy Veil since the thread was started. Now $4518.75!

I also paid a lot less than the listed price for my cheaper Veil model using my builder's prices.

No issues with my Veil toilets in the 7 months they have been installed.

@rcseattle The Toto Neorests are the gold standard right now, though they are a drop bulkier like you pointed out. The Toto Neorest 700H is slightly sleeker than the 550H you had until now.

I'm doing a full remodel of a house with a modern aesthetic. Design wise, I've been drawn to the Duravit bidet toilets for their clean lines and the fact that Duravit is a well-known and respected manufacter. However, they have limited experience in the bidet toilet world, and I haven't seen many reviews of their toilets (and what I have seen has not been good). Also, their designs are so streamlined that I wonder how they can fit everything into such a small space.

A salesperson told me that she's selling a lot of Axent toilets, and her customers love them. I think the design is great, but the company seems new and I wonder how the toilets will perform long-term. I have similar concerns about the Icera toilets.

I had initially dismissed the DXV toilets until I learned of the INAX connection. I would be interested to hear your thoughts about any of these brands' smart toilets. These integrated smart toilets are indeed a pricey luxury, but once you've used one, it's hard to go back! Thank you!

It's more pricey but Toto does have a more unique design with the one piece Neorest NX1.

In regards to Duravit. We have had very positive feedback on the Starck F and I series. If you are doing a full remodel, and you want a sleek look, your best bet might be the wall mounted Sensowash Starck F. The Sensowash I Plus and I Lite are more similar to the others.

I will agree with that assessment of Axent. Their new One C Plus 2.0 has been getting rave reviews. The quality definitely seems up to par and should last, but as you said, it hasn't been out long enough to have a proven long term track record.

Not sure if this will make a big difference to you, but one thing to note is that in the case of a loss of power the Duravit and Axent options will handle multiple flushes much better than the Toto will.

Thanks for your perspective. I've seen the NX1 and while it's a unique and sculptural design, it's still quite big and bulky. The toilet will be in a separate walled off area, so size is definitely an issue.

I will take another look at the Duravits. The feedback I've seen is that when something breaks, Duravit has not stood behind its products. Their designs are great though. I will also look at the Axents since their pricing is more competitive. Power outages aren't as much of an issue, and we will definitely have a "dumb" toilet just in case!

chispa @chispa how do you like the Veil toilet seat. I saw it in the store and noticed it is plastic and makes a little creaking sound when opening or closing. I love the look but curious about that part. Thanks!!
