This is a tough one... your best bet to modernize is to replace the brown shower tile on the wall but that would of course mean replacing the floor tile too. A new vanity, mirror and lighting would likely help elevate the space... brighter colors may be your friend if you want to make it feel less dated and/or dark.

I think you should embrace the frosted glass contertop color. To me it looks like an aqua color. I would paint the walls a shade of aqua and than use an aqua and brown shower curtain. Towels could also be aqua or brown or a combination of those colors.

I’m normally not a fan of brown to say the least, but I really love that tile!!

Since it all looks relatively new, I would live with it and add accesories like badgergal suggests.

Brown and white can be striking. Look at the juxtaposition of your tile and the white shower curtain.

Consider a marble white countertop with a white vanity. Add some shelves or artwork over the toilet. Update the mirror. Remove the small towel bar, from right there and add a towel ring.

Thank you all. Really appreciate the thoughtful comments. I especially like @jackowskib idea of hanging an extra long shower curtain higher than normal to break up the brown.

Also want to report that I went back today and turned the pot lights on for the first time, and the aqua vanity magically turned white!!

So I think I will try to embrace the juxtaposition of brown and white as @shirlpp suggested.
