I would take it out. You could use the space much better with a chair with a small table and lamp for reading. I am guessing you do not use the dry bar. If you keep it, I like your ideas of painting the cabinets, new hardware. I would make it a coffee/ tea bar and add some sort of open shelving above it.

Get rid of it. If you need storage, buy a piece of furniture.

It's not a matter of updated or outdated. It's a style choice. Do you use it now? The entire concept of schlepping coffee cups, food I don't get. I have a lovely cozy living room why would I hold up in a bedroom? You evidently embrace the idea of a sitting room there. You have lived with it this long. Only you know if you find it convenient or more work. I think a teen would adore such a luxury but I didn't encourage mine to hide in their bedrooms. I was the mean mom no TV, no microwave, no computer, no gaming console in bedrooms.

IMO you need to decide if you need it when I look at the pic I see a space that coulld be used as an office or a nice spot to watch TV when hubby has sports on but in either case I would remove the dry bar do the flooring and then decide what you want frome the space . In my experience my clients who insist on a seating space in the bedroom rarely use it and the furniture just becomes a place to throw clothes .What ever you decide please deal with the lighting for sure . Does the bedroom have ahuge walk in closet ? What is outside the door? I try really hard to keep clients from making huge decisions in a new house since houses have a way of telling you how to use the spaces . I sure hope if new floors are now happening you get enought to do all the spaces the same and extra for the kitchen

I'm with the majority: how would you use it? I can imagine this space as a work-out spot, a TV room, or a craft area. If you'd use these cabinets for whatever YOU can see in this room, great -- keep them. Otherwise, remove them.

If you're keeping the area as a TV room or whatever, you might consider removing the granite and adding shelves above. Storage for games, hobby materials, etc. below and books above could look nice.

Now is the time to remove when redoing floors. If you feel down the road you like the idea, just get a small unit.

You‘ll now have a blank slate, with extra space/more options, furniture and layout wise. Think about how you want to use area (tv, reading, storage, desk, etc) and create an on line floor plan to test and be sure to complement bedroom.

Can you post more photos of the room? How far is it to a kitchen or refrigerator? It looks like the room opens to a porch. Would it be handy to have access to cold drinks for yourself if you were sitting out there? Not suggesting it be made open to everyone if that’s the case, but since you’re going for a high end look, it might be a good exercise to consider setting it up like a nice hotel suite. If you don’t think you’ll use it though, get rid of it.

Thank you so much everyone! Very helpful ideas. Here is a picture of the main floor plan. We have a his and hers walk in closet, so the storage isn’t necessary and the access onto the deck is one of 3 access points so not something we need to consider for guests to use while they are visiting on the deck. I like the idea of turning the space into something we would actually use.
