For what it's worth, I have a piano template, so I know either placement fits (perhaps hard to tell from a photo, but it's a large room).

In my last house I had a Yamaha baby grand in a room with a window very similar to yours! I'll need to look for a photo to share. I downsized and sold the piano. Please know if you have to sell a piano that is not a Steinway, the market is limited. I finally sold my piano on consignment at a local piano retailer. He told me that it is much easier to sell a black piano than any other color. I know you aren't thinking of this now, but something to consider.

MO pianos are best placed so the player faces the room . I need to know the size of the room I have a client who has a grand piano and finding a condo for him with a room large enough for the piano was ahuge job. There is ahuge difference from a baby grand to a full grand and as much as that window seems like a great spot it is not in anyway where a piano should sit you need about 300Sq ft of room for a grand. If you post a to scale plan we have a better idea of the space .Who plays the piano and where are you buying it . The plce where you buy them is the place to give you the best advice on what will work in your space as to sound too.

Oh, maybe check with the piano dealer about harm to the piano from the sun. If your windows aren't low-e, you may want to check into having film added to them to protect your investment.

Hmm...Is this just for looks? What about the sound? If you really intend to play the piano, then size affects the sound. Pianists in the family tell me there is a sound difference etc. between a baby and a full.

The room is 132 (wide) x 191 (long).

The piano dealer (full service store) has advised on placement. He raised the window issue, but after reviewing the type of windows/sun exposure/(lack of) fading on the leather chairs thinks the piano will be fine there.

We do intend to use the piano, although the looks are important, too, which is why I'm not willing to consider moving it to another room. As far as sound, the dealer suggested we don't need a full grand due to the wood floors/high ceilings/lack of excess furniture/curtains/heavy rugs. I don't know if that is true.

Correction - the room is 19'x24' (456 square feet?)

I have an almost 100 yr old baby grand 5’2” of my grandmothers that i had refinished. It had sat in a sunroom for many years and the finish became ”craized”. If you put it near your windows, I would address the sunlight, as well as humidity which is a big issue for pianos. You can buy a device for the piano to help maintain the humidity. I live in a cold climate as well and can hear the difference when the humidity drops.

The bell (curve) should open to the room for the best sound projection.

I prefer leggy seating pieces to sit entirely on rugs, so I suggest a larger rug where both sofas and chairs can be placed. Are you adamant about the symmetry? Can you provide a photo taken while standing in the large curved window and shooting toward the back of the room? Are all the side openings windows or are some of them doorways? Be sure to include them in the photo.

The chairs will not stay - that is where the piano would go. And to get a rug that big... wow. I have a 9x13 now.

Side openings are windows. Room really extends much farther in length past the image, but is occupied by a bar and open area adjacent to our dining room. The house also widens after this part.

If it were me I would angle it in the opening with the keyboard at one end of the windows and the lid opening such that the strings are exposed out towards the room for the best sound (see fi picture as example). As for piano size, a baby grand is probably fine but go with your heart. I have my mom's 110 year old Chickering Grand in brown finish and it hasn't faded a bit even though its in my very bright foyer. Black is lovely too. Congrats on the purchase! You will love it!

Wendy - that's the placement I was considering. Which led me to think a 5'2 or 5'4 piano is probably right. I think something 6' would be too large to angle.

Sounds like a wise choice and you should get plenty of sound. I love your clean modern aesthetic so far. I’m a fan of R&B furniture too!

You have plenty of space for a medium grand. Do compare the sound and play quality before committing to a baby grand if someone actually plays. :)

I've narrowed my decision to 5'4 or 5'10 piano. Thinking of this placement if anyone wants to weigh in again.

For what it's worth, I am going to need to move the piano a little to place our (15 foot) Christmas tree each December.

The sofas can move farther away from the windows, there's still room.
