Stone top for dining table

Help us pick a top for our dining table!

We’re tasked with choosing a marble or quartzite top for our custom dining table base and not sure what route to take. We’ve looked at a few options and we want to go bold considering a few things:

  • dining chairs have black leather seats.
-our home has terrazzo floors throughout (beige tones)
  • kitchen countertops are white quartz with veining.

We want to avoid neutral tones as it will all be too bland… and we have this black quartzite in mind but is it too bold? Didn’t think this was going to be too
hard!

Beautiful stone, I have a similar granite (nightfall) leathered as my island. Somehow the gloss seems very corporate but that’s personal and depends on all the other materials in the space . Make sure to test the quartzite for etching- some of what is sold is actually marble

    Bold black, less veining.

Thanks for the comments! We are gearing more towards a black stone but I can’t seem to be totally convinced! Here are other styles we looked at… a green one too looked really good but may be too much. It’s hard to pick a style and color when we have to consider how it plays with the surrounding elements.. especially our floors!

Yes, I think I agree! Now that I see the base set up in my space I feel like maybe less veining would work with our floors.

So… I went to look at a few more stones for our table and the options were 🤩 I had to focus though because I know I can’t go too crazy with my floors. Here are the ones we saw

They are both grey but different shades. There was one “Sahara Noir” that looked promising but too modern for us

Have you considered thick tempered glass? That table base is too too interesting to hide behind stone, IMO.

I agree with decoenthusiast! That is a beautiful base and I think a glass top would look great.

I also love the idea of glass. Of the granites, the second one is my fave for your purpose. All the slabs are gorgeous, imo, but fewer veins seems better. Personally, I’d go for glass. My glass kitchen table was my favorite thing and I’m sorry I left it in my last home. The base is pretty and it’d be nice to see.

I’ve had a glass table top and hated it. The sound of things being set on it rattles my brain, and you have to use placemats constantly or it scratches. Ugh. The stone is a much more interesting top imho.

I would definitely go with a black top. I had a custom dining table built 20 years ago and used an slate top that is a very deep charcoal / black color and we love it. It’s very simple and modern and we have never tired of it. I will try and post a picture.
I think you would hate glass. It’s noisy and I don’t think it will give you the wow factor that you’re trying to achieve.

Current look but I have had different color walls and accent rugs and the black table always grounds the space.

Hey all! Thanks again for the input! Beautiful home and dining room Pauline, thanks for sharing!

I have to agree with the comments on glass tabletop.. I currently have a glass top coffee table and I don’t love it! Might just use the leftover marble to redo my coffee table too lol!

As for my dining table base, it’s custom made by my dad and it’s beautiful 🤩 but we always intended for it to have a stone top of some sort so I think it will complement it well.

IMO, terazzo works as a "stone" does in look and the visual heft it adds to a room. Three different stones seems excessive to me and I don't think a stone table top will "ground" the room but will weigh it down. It IS your home though. I hope your dad agrees to hiding his handiwork that much!

Totally true decoenthusiaste! I do agree but I guess I should’ve posted more photos of the living dining area so it helps with understanding the look of the whole space (surrounding furniture and decor) 😃 yes, we do have terrazzo floors throughout the whole house (we got lucky! ) and the kitchen dining and living are open concept and it’s a large area but the living room has a lot of neutral furniture as well as some walnut tones. I think we should be fine with one more stone BUT that said, I don’t want to make it too bold 😣 my very first choices, though beautiful on their own, will definitely be too much!

My dad is an architect but his hobby is carpentry. He designed our whole house renovations and I always follow his suggestions for design or finishes.. he’s almost “always” right! 😆 he says to go with a black stone less veining

I would just paint the top of the table a black or a charcoal how to get the stone but get a heavy duty paint

Otherwise get a thin Stone so it won't be so heavy looking

Yes, a thinner slab will give the table a lighter look. I understand not wanting glass. I like the second photo,of the granites for your table (love the green one for something else). All the busier ones make the room too dizzying - there’s a terrazzo floor, a stone countertop and now a third element.

Your dad is right. It will be fine with a black stone and subtle veining, but ask for a thin piece if they have one.

Yes, I definitely won’t get a thick stone top. I think 3/4 is what we are thinking

Hi everyone! Just wanted to update you with the final dining table look! Here it is! I went with something way different than black but I think this turned out beautiful! The colors on the stone really complement the base, I’m happy!

LOVE it! Looks so nice with the table base that your father made!
Thanks for sharing. I was wondering what you would decide in the end.

    Stunning with floor & wood!

Thank you!! My dad also approved! I’m super happy with the pattern and color on the stone, it plays so well with the floor, kitchen and living furniture. I don’t love the chairs though! (I already had them) but I can get different ones later on I guess!
