Yes, agree with the above comment that my bed cannot be considered "styled" -- it's functional. Queen bed with fitted sheet, and two twin duvets. No fighting over covers. Pillows as used (husband uses two; I currently have four due to surgery). Not much decor going on there.

I use a fitted,a top sheet, a damask blanket and a duevet cover. two sleeping pillows, two matching covered pillows. I ignore the wrinkles :)

Duvet w/ cover, fitted sheet (no top sheet) and three pillows each: 1 std (underneath), long king feather pillows (yellow), and Euro down pillows in white, above. I have at least three sets of pillowcases for each size, including linen cases with monogram, light gold buffalo check, olive green and vintage embroidered His and Hers cases. Nothing purely decorative on this bed, and one of is makes it every day. (i do a better job but appreciate the help.)

I'm a quilter and there is always a quilt that I have made for my bed on it! since I do not make my quilts big enough to cover the pillows, I just have the quilt on the bed with the pillows on top--Nothing fussy and anything we have to remove before going to bed!

I chose #1, but my bed ain't styled. It has a good mattress and clean sheets. I share it with two cats so there's fur and claws. It's my bedroom, and it's not off limits to others, but it kinda is.

Our sleeping pillows are hidden behind the other 30 pillows on the bed. (Slight exaggeration.)

I have a quilt and matching shams. Quilt gets folded down at night. When bed is made 2 sleeping pillows go behind pillows in shams. Other 2 sleeping pillows go in closet.

Thanks, @Jilly. Criteria for new house was place for screen and new MBR rug had to fit in MBR. Probably a few other things too. There was no place else to put the secretary, so MBR it was. There is plenty of room between it and bed, but doors have to stay closed. Fortuny light fixture was on the "does not stay" list and a slight pain to move, but worth it.

My bed is styled with a cream matelasse coverlet on top; underneath are the sheets, then a light microfiber blanket. On the top are our “sleeping pillows”. I keep it simple; it is easy to “make the bed” in the morning!

PS: I love my Kate Spade Weston cotton sateen hemstitch sheets and pillowcases; I have several sets in various solid colors.

I used to ”style” with shams on the pillows and a comforter over top sheet and blanket. and a throw at the foot, I have ditched the blanket, so much better. The shams, well, DH would either pull them off and toss them in the corner, or just sleep on them. So, now it is just the comforter. The throw and its partner are on the blanket rack at the foot. I do fold the sheet back over th3 comforter, mainly so that DH doesn’t sleep on top of the top sheet. Sigh.

@Jilly I change the cover at the end of the bed and the shams pretty often too. Always the cream main cover but I love to mix it up. I have a few I rotate hehe!

I’m actually looking for a new duvet or comforter, but will wait until next winter. In the summer, we just use the gold coverlet. :)

For styling, I wonder if part of the reason we do it is not just how nice it looks, but the, oh, ritual? of arranging it in the morning, and of unarranging and folding back the covers at night?

Our bed has a cream colored mattlasse comforter and shams, cream colored bedskirt, and a very pretty cream crocheted throw folded across the bottom of the mattress. A few special throw pillows as well. Any other colors in the room are rose and a soft green. I styled it like this for two reasons. (1) Because the wall to the right of our bed has 3 glass patio doors with a gorgeous view of our mountain. To the left of the bed is another patio door looking our onto my walled patio and garden, filled in season with pastel flowers. I didn't want the bed competing with our beautiful views. And (2) I wanted our exposed adobe walls to also be a major focus, too. This is an older pic that I might have posted before, but it’s too early for me to go make the bed and take a new pic, as I’m still enjoying my morning coffee🥴.

@bpath good question. Like Jinx, I prefer getting into a made up bed. Or at least straightened up. (If left to my husband, all covers are pulled up and straightened, not really made-up), but for me, it's not a ritual. It's part of my love of making a room pretty. It's also part of my love of fabrics! There will never be shower doors in our home and I can't imagine not having drapes/window treatments in at least some of our rooms. I'll always have pillows! So the bed is just another place for me to indulge in fabric LOL.

I think I inherited much of this from my grandmother. She and my mom could both make a room beautiful, but there were 3 kids at our house. My grandparent's house was "fancier" in my eye's (as a child). I especially adored the "adult" guestroom and probably much of my love of pink came from my grandmother and that room. The bathroom directly across the hall had pink tile. : )

Once I got to a certain age, I was allowed to sleep in that room rather than the bedroom outfitted for the grandchildren. It was a treat.

I will say that bed-making was instilled in me by both my grandmother and my mom. Our beds were made every morning.

I use a quilt in the winter and coverlet in the summer with euro shams. Very simple.

No decorative anything that isn't functional - I use a fitted and flat sheet, topped by a feather duvet in a duvet cover. Pillows at the top of the bed (4), uncovered by anything other than the normal pillowcases. Yes, the percale cotton is wrinkled, but I don't really care :) I love the feeling of percale cotton.

Out of curiosity, does anyone's spouse object to decorative pillows? Mine would be extremely annoyed. He tolerates my use of a patterned duvet cover, but draws the line at anything slowing him down from climbing into bed.

At night I fling my bra across the room. I can't imagine if I had decorative pillows to chuck as well.

Fitted sheet, flat sheet, cotton blanket. All covered with a white cotton coverlet. Down duvet with duvet cover folded at the foot of the bed. Three euro shams that match the duvet cover. Two king shams in that match the coverlet. Mongramed decorative pillow that matches the curtains.

Pricklypear, no, my DH likes to recline on them.

Prickly, my DH does not ”do” decorative pillows or shams. So I only put them on if someone else will be seeing the bedroom. If he makes the bec before I do. he pulls only the comforter up, and not straight, and doesn’t do anything with the topsheet. I usually redo it later in the day, it takes only 3 seconds anyway. I have to get into a smooth bed.

I have one small ”decorative” pillow, but I sometimes use it for a little extra back support if I’m reading, or if my carpal tunnel kicks up and I don’t feel like getting my brace.

For my queen-size bed in L.A., I made myself a heavy chenille bedspread that is wide enough to go to the floor on the sides and long enough to cover the six sleeping pillows that I have. This creates a somewhat large hump at the head of the bed, but two of the pillows are rather stiff and firm and are used to stand up against the metal headboard. I use top and bottom sheets (the bottom sheet is not always fitted) and have a comforter between the top sheet and bedspread.

In Cathedral City, I have a California King bed (came with the house), and I've been using the quilted bedspread and decorative pillows that came with it. Since the bedspread is quilted, I do not use a comforter, and the house there is warm all the time anyway. I use a fitted bottom sheet and a flat top sheet.

Here's how the previous owner styled the master bedroom:

I put the fake palm tree outside in the patio, in a pot behind the spa, and I donated the clock and the brass tree sculpture shown on the wall above the bed. There is nothing above the bed now.

I have some very nice brocade fabric that I got at work that has scenes of camels (with Arabian looking riders) on it that I plan to use to make a new duvet cover, but I need to get some lining fabric for it. I do not have enough for decorative pillows, but I have other fabrics that I can use for those.

I have no rugs in the bedroom and do not need them, as the tile floor does not get cold, but I keep slippers close to the bed for when I get up.

Here's how I styled my brother's bed in L.A.

I built a headboard for him out of plywood, which I cut into this shape, and I upholstered it with African mudcloth, which I backed with black fusable interfacing. The bedspread is one large piece of mudcloth that he simply drapes over the bed pillows.

I bought the mudcloth fabrics at one of my favorite shops in Leimert Park. I don't remember the name of the shop, but I know how to get there. I've bought a few African masks there as well.

I could buy more mudcloth to make decorative pillows, but I think the bed is busy enough without that.

I like the mudcloth fabrics, @Lars. The decor that the former owners left in the Cathedral City house certainly don't shout desert getaway, does it?

When we transitioned a couple of years ago to a king from a queen, I improvised somewhat from what I had and liked on our queen bed. Fortunatrly Annie Selke still had the euro shams in stock so I just added one and kept the large bolster pillow and scarf and bought a different king quilt (Target) in a washable cotton and cashmere (only 10% but is nice). The scarf could be longer but I still like the persimmon color and blending of patterns. The bed is easy to make.

I'd take a picture but that means I'd have to clean. :) I voted duvet only, but I keep my fuzzy blanket & a light quilt on top. No top sheet, and just nice pillow cases is all.

Found a pic of my very basic bed ”styling.” I am not sure why the sleeping pillows aren’t there, but they are usually tucked in behind the shammed (new word) pillows.

My linen quilt and sheets are all from Parachute. I thought I liked linen sheets but sometimes I feel like they’re too warm, believe it or not (hello, menopause). I might get some crisp percale sheets for summer.

Looking at this pic, I suddenly want drapes.

Since we're sharing bedding sources, I recently purchased Brooklinen's Luxe Sateen sheets and I am quite happy with them from a comfort standpoint. After about 2 washes they've become incredibly soft and comfortable. Not slippery / fake silk like so many sateen sheets can be. They're just soft and buttery. My only complaint is that I think the flat sheet is a tiny bit narrower than I'd prefer.

For duvet covers, my favorite was from Anthropologie many years ago. But I haven't been very excited about their more recent offerings. My current duvet cover is from Ballard Designs. And I'm always eyeing the lovely duvets from Pottery Barn. While I rarely wear pattern and don't have a lot in my home, I do love a patterned duvet over solid sheets. I just love how it brings some interest to the room. Maybe if I used decorative pillows I wouldn't feel so drawn to the patterned duvets.

This shows the valances that I made for his windows, and I have more of this fabric, which I could use for decorative pillows. We also have a full set of crystal singing bowls.

Nicole, the previous owners of the house in Cathedral City have their primary residence in Ottawa, Canada, and they bought a vacation house in Florida when they sold to use. Their children refused to visit Palm Springs and wanted to vacation in Florida instead. The husband owner played golf, and that's why he liked Palm Springs.

I'm going to have to finish my kitchen project before I work on my bedspread, and the cabinets are going to be demolished fairly soon. This might interfere with my sewing space.

my bedding is super casual. I don't care about wrinkled pillowcases. I don't use a top sheet. the fitted sheets are stretchy, so they stay smooth all the time.

this is actually two twin duvets draped "sideways" so they cover the whole bed. one is pulled up slightly higher and folded at the top to cover up how they overlap each other. we separate them at bedtime. my husband is a blanket stealer so this is the only way.

also, I only make the bed like this when we have new guests and I might be giving a tour. otherwise I just put the duvets side by side and don't really care if there's a big overlap in the middle.

I find the simplicity of a duvet only appealing but I must have layers as my body cycles through iceberg to sauna temperatures. Generally though, I am ok with a cool room, fan and top sheet, blanket and down filled duvet with cover.

In the winter, we use a lightweight duvet and cover, and then will add a light blanket and a flannel flat sheet overtop all of it because we have cats who like to sleep on the bed and I would prefer they get the flannel sheet furry rather than the duvet cover. We both sleep kind of warm so that is enough, but we do have down comforters on hand if necessary. In the summer, we generally use a top sheet, and then I top the bed with a linen striped or print flat sheet from Garnet Hill. We do use a cotton/linen blend quilt in between cold and warm seasons. We don't do decorative pillows - just our sleeping pillows plus two king shammed pillows as I like to read in bed and use the shammed pillows to lean against. For my husband, even the one king shammed pillow on his side is too much, but he doesn't complain as he tosses it on the floor each night. ;)
