Here too, not quite so low 24 for me and my once bloomers are already loaded for some :((

Our low was 3°F this morning... high of 59°F tomorrow! Lol.

Looks like Mother Nature is pitching a hissy fit, as we say down South, lol.

The real problem here is that we've had three weeks or more of temps mostly in the 60's to low 70's. The maples and elms, forsythia and redbuds are blooming, and my roses are almost in full leaf. Ugh. If we reach the forecast 13F, it will break the record low for that day by three degrees.

I'm far enough northeast and probably a couple of hundred feet higher than fig, and here both winter jasmine AND forsythia are showing yellow, but not open. Even our silver maples are slow to open and not a redbud is to be seen.

Accuweather has us getting down to 8F and not getting above freezing at all on Saturday. I'd almost accept an ice storm (a small one) to provide protection for all the plants and keep the new buds to a balmy 32F.

No wonder none of the cats have started shedding yet.

Ous to John, I have blooms open on some Louisiana iris, blooms up on bearded, blooms about to open on fortunia, my early spring late winter stuff is done or still blooming. Dog woods are blooming, winter jasmine, yellow jasmine, about all jasmine, tulips, daffodils, you name it. This is for the dogs, literally.

@Alana8aSC Hi Alana. So sorry both for the impending freeze, and for not answering your last email. Spring chores (pruning 200+ roses, plus fruit/nut trees, plowing the veggie garden, etc) have kept me uber busy, then I collapse into bed two hours early, lol. Today I'm bringing my pot ghetto into the garage. I promise I'll get back to you soon.

What is this 'spring' of which you speak?

I do have snowdrops, but part of the point of being a snowdrop is being able to handle these conditions. Aside from that, everything is still safely asleep, and will be for a few weeks. Also, we are only expecting a low of 18, with 3 to 6 inches of snow.

You are fine John, I figured you were busy! I have been doing much the same, maybe not as much as you though, I am behind! Lol

We've been having temps almost up to 80. Sat. night it's going to start freezing around 6 pm and temps will drop from that to about 19 or 20, staying frozen for about 15 hours. Forsythia is just starting to bloom today, and many flowering trees just started so if the cold ruins their bloom it will be the shortest beautiful spring ever. Daffodils, hyacinths, crocus are all blooming. I brought a lot of plants under my house and am bringing some potted clems indoors. Can get them back out Monday. Most of my roses are partially leafed out.

For some reason this thread warms my heart, if not the climate. Affectionate greetings to all, and I hope your gardens come through these vicissitudes as gracefully as possible. As for us, temperatures are mild and the garden is lovely, but WE NEED RAIN.

Same here. All our citrus died from the winter storm so we replaced the mandarin, lemon and avocado only to get freezing Temps tonight. Sigh. As for those who need rain...we get too much and everything rots ( ....wish it's more evenly distributed .

The not very subtle irony here is that most of us live in the "temperate" zone.

Some of us even live at the same degrees north. But topography rules.

A strong wind is starting to blow the cold in. It's making a lot of noise up there. I got m ost of the plants protected that I'm going to protect but most of my garden is on its own. It'll be balmy next week.

I was running in shorts and a singlet last Saturday, and today there's snow on the ground and 28°! I have to check for the forsythia. I hope its still a couple of weeks away because I have too much else to do besides starting to prune! LOL! Smiley face

Welp, we got four or five inches of snow last night, more than predicted, after a high yesterday of 66F. It's the biggest snow by far that we've had this "winter". At 2am it was coming down so hard I couldn't see the edge of the bottom step out front, lol. I haven't seen it snow that hard in a lonnnnnnng time. My brother, who just lives about 5 miles away, got almost 7 inches. Friends who live 10 miles in the other direction from my brother, only got 3 inches. Still others that live near the lake got about 9 inches. All this variation was in a 15 mile radius. I haven't heard what the totals were in the higher elevations, but of course the prediction was for more than here. I'm betting they got a LOT, lol.

They're still predicting 13F for tonight, but then nearly 50 tomorrow, and back in the 60's and 70's the rest of the week.

Fig - that's a LOT of snow!! I can't imagine getting 7-9 inches in one day.

We had ”snow possible” predictions and ended up with 3”

It was 60 degrees today.

The wind and cold passed. I got all my plants back outside and watered them. I don't see that much damage to my roses but it can take several days or longer to show up. I see some wilted burgundy new growth . I saw hyacinths on the ground and a wilted Rooguchi clematis that has 2.5' of new growth on it. I watered both and both perked back up. I think freeze damage is not only damage to some cells but the interruption of water moving up the plant. I think they do better if hydrated before and after a freeze.

Anyway it's beautiful out now, and no freezes are in sight for the next two weeks.

I lost some blooms, some vegetables from the unheated greenhouse, a few new canes that were coming up, which it looks they might not die all the way. More than I wanted. Now I have to restart seeds :(

I was soo worried about my stuff in my greenhouse! Not ideal and not the safest, but on the coldest night I put a little propane camp burner in the greenhouse. My greenhouse is small enough it worked, along with the electric heater we have in there. I got up a couple times to check it throughout the night. Now the forcast is 50s qnd 60s!

We have had "perfect" weather here since Jan. Sunny every day, mild temps - highs in the F 60s or 70s, and the air is full of Spring. HOWEVER, no rain at all in Jan/Feb. I was going to add March, but it did rain a bit (.05inches) a couple of weeks ago, and then last night again. Last night it rained enough to wet our driveway, and fill up one of the smaller bird baths which was empty yesterday. Most of my bulbs are up, and also blooming already, and about half of my roses have some open blooms already. They are bedewed with droplets from the rain, and all seem MUCH happier than they did yesterday. I so hope this happens again!

66F Friday, blizzard Friday night with 6+ inches, 14F Sunday morning, 6" snow 100% melted by Monday, 66F today...70's the rest of the week.
