Ideally, for continuity & flow, from wherever you're standing you should see the same flooring. When you don't, the space looks choppy.

Thank you! Our plan is to do hardwood floor in the kitchen. The kitchen is part of a great room that also has dining/family/living room and we’d like that entire space to be hardwood. Original owners did tile (the same in the entry) in the kitchen area and carpet in the rest of the great room. When you’re in the great room, you only see a sliver of the entry.

You can do wood in the entry too. My previous house had tie and current has wood. And the wood looks 100 times better and no additional wear.

Oh, I hadn’t really thought about that! We live in Michigan though and have 5 months of tracking snow in and 3 months of rain/mud. I’m nervous it wouldn’t be able to handle that much moisture/abuse. Does yours get very much snow/rain/mud?

Don't do hardwood in your entry for all the reasons you mention (speaking from experience!!!!)

No...we are in Houston and only deal with rain. I do have a large rug in the entryway, but also a covered porch and a rug there. Is the front door the main entry for the family? We mainly use the entrance from the garage, so all the dirt etc gets taken care of before we enter the house.
