Converting wood chips to usable mulch

I've had a ton of trees cut down, and I've been chipping the limbs, leaves, and pine needles in the hopes of using it as mulch in the near future.

Any suggestions on the "best" way to make this usable?

The chips range from dust to 2" cubes.

My initial thought... mix it 50/50 with some sort of manure, then let it sit until next year. Horse manure is given away regularly in my area, but cow and chicken manure are also easily found.

The soil here is mostly red clay, so high in iron. It's also pretty hard, so I'm always tossing out coffee grounds and trying to encourage earthworms to loosen it up a little.
