The leaves Look a lot like Partridge berry (Mitchella repens) that grows here in SW Michigan. Unless I have been identifying it wrong all these years :-)

Hmmmm. I’m very familiar with the Euonymus but not with Mitchella. However, just going by online images I’m not sure the above is Mitchella. The leaves are oval and serrated. Images of Mitchella seem to be more heart shaped and smooth edged. But, as I say, I don’t know Mitchella in person.

I’m familiar with partridgeberry and I didn’t think it looked like patridgeberry at all unless it’s a species that I’m not familiar with. I just pulled it out yesterday so if it turns out to be of some value I could still save it.

I have been calling it wrong all these years. The sample in my 1st

photo is Euonymus fortunei. I have seen it in 2 locations since 2014 and those specimens are both "an evergreen shrub which grows as a vine", it does indeed climb up the sides of trees and stays green all year long.

I finally actually saw the genuine Mitchella repens in 2020 in a different location and that photo I attached to this comment. These specimens all stayed on the ground and did not climb the trees that that they were growing underneath.
