Also known as Dermatophyllum secundiflorum/Texas Mountain Laurel/Mescal bean. But it's not a true laurel. But it IS gorgeous, and I wish I could grow it here.

Interesting that it isn't really a laurel. But looks like that's true. Laurels are Laurus. I think the "mescal bean" berries on Texas Mountain Laurel are somewhat hallucinogenic. But they actually don't contain mescal or mescaline. The beans drop, and we get little plants popping up routinely. The early spring bloom is nice.

Several different species get called ’Laurel’. Since it is a common name, not a botanical one, there isn’t strictly speaking a ’true’ Laurel. Most of them are Prunus species eg Cherry Laurel, English Laurel, Portuguese Laurel etc. The genus Laurus contains very few species, the most well known being L nobilis, Bay Laurel. However, it’s curious that a pinnate leaved tree should have been called a Laurel.
