My Master bath, in-progress

last modified: 4 years ago

My counter is my bathroom is in, and i love it. Thank you Lyfia for the suggestion of wood.

Is it NOT DONE YET because the molding above the counter is still off, since I am replacing that mirror. There is mirror above and below the counter, giving the effect of the counter being mounted on one huge floor-to-ceiling mirror. Sadly that effect is mostly visible to birds nesting in the tree outside my tub, since the vanity is to the right rather that straight ahead when you enter, you don't really get the effect ...duh me.

Anyway, the molding is off because I'm waiting for them to replace the mirror. It was replaced once before because the glue holding it in started to show through. It was always antiqued around the perimeter (A friend had that in their bar and I was always jelly). Last time I paid for it to be antiqued again, but the antiquing was a bit heavy. It needs to be replaced again and I am not sure why (discolored behind the sink). This time I chose plain mirror, cheaper plus o/w I'm afraid someone could think it was mold!

I went shopping today for decorative items (I have a lot of room and don't really need anything, so it is just for looks). Since my faucets are white porcelain with black lettering, I stayed w b/w theme. Since it is the "girls" MBA, I added an orchid and a print so it is not too masculine (DH's BA is grey and white). Steam is not an issue in this BA, because the shower is literally a shower room and the mirror never even fogs up.

Still needed --- our MBR is mostly neutral, with moss green and powder blue bedding and accents. I want to bring those colors in to my BA with new handtowels and a rug?

Pic- tures, Pic- tures, Pic- TURES!!!! Do they not understand that we NEED to SEE this????

Looks like they got photo posting working again, so...

NOTE: WORK in PROGRESS - molding on top half is missing until the mirror is replaced.

IT IS FABULOUS. I love it!!

Thank you for making good decisions about my house. I’m not going to change a thing when I move in.

I want to bring in some blue and green into the room because I have those colors in the MBR. OTOH, I used b/w vanity set because the faucets are b/w. Maybe that was a mistake?

Three rugs are on the way, to go in front of the tub. I take a bath maybe a few times a month, and usually just roll up the rug (I have a silk Turkish one there now).

Thinking of blue fouta with fringe as hand towels, layered over pure white or maybe moss green. Right now I have very pale pink hand towels with gold elephants.

    maybe this:

I would say no to the tufted rug only because, in my experience, tufted rugs never stop shedding no matter how many times they are vacuumed. YMMV.

I absolutely love the first rug!

Great choice - Lyfia for the win! That last rug is so unexpected - in a good way. That's my vote.

A gorgeous vanity, Mtn. I like the first and last rugs in the line-up.

Thanks, all! Funky, you and I always like the same things. The first one is my fave. Plus, it also relates to the black and white theme I have going with the french faucets. I was thinking of switching the artwork for something b/w but all i have that is the right size and orientation is a family photo; I may put it there for me for now, it's a fave.

The first three rugs are on the way, the last one I came across last night and I will prob only order it if I don't care for the others. The first is also the largest, at 3x5.

Still looking for hand towels. Trying to be patient; mirror won't be in until w/o 4/11. : (

Here are three mockups I did last night when i wanted votes on what to order. Meantime I have ordered. I didn't bother to mock up the blue and white one (gorgeous John Robshaw) bec I think the white is too stark.

I want to layer light blue fouta over green hand towels to bring in the blue and green, which is what you see in the mock up. This is just my BA and IRL I have a white terry robe hanging from the WC door and I use that to dry my hands; these hand towels have always been for show. Love my vintage milk glass towel racks tho!

Reminder of my MBR color scheme:

The leopard rug got my vote immediately because 1- I love leopard and 2- it adds that touch of black. But all mock-ups look really nice - can't wait to see them for real. That will make the final decision easier.

Love the first two, either would look fab. I feel the third is maybe too matchy?

The leopard does add a touch of whimsy and fun.

Spectacular! Mtn, will you come design my bathroom please?

I adore the leopard -- love the colors and the touch of whimsy... but in the photos of it on anthro and google images, the colors vary quite a bit. I am holding my breath until the rugs arrive and you can see them in situ.

The one thing that bummed me out is that one of the reviewers on anthro mentioned that the black in the leopard spots is not colorfast. She shows an image of where the color bled after getting wet.

Yes, I saw that about color fastness. I dry my feet before I leave the shower (there are towel hooks in the shower room), so not too worried. I have a very expensive silk rug there now, for 10 years, and that really cannot get wet.

I like all of the choices. Can't wait to see them in situ!

I'll be the outlier and say I'm not feeling the leopard rug or the green hand towels. I think they're both too... too something in such a serene space, esp with the MBR colors.

    mtnrdredux_gw thanked Feathers11

    Feathers,

The green hand towels in just the right color -- that mossy green of the throw --- are hard to source. But the cachepot for the orchid is lime. I will have to see what is avail. esp since I only want 2 hand towels, not a set of towels.

You are right that the BR is very serene by comparison, but keep in mind that the actual effect of the rug is far less since it is not on the plane shown in the mock up.

Would you bring in the blue and green in a different way, or not at all?

Yes, true about the rug, Mtn. I've always had a hard time envisioning rugs in their spaces (esp. rugs online).

I really like your current artwork, along with the frame. You indicated you were replacing that with a b/w family photo, so of course that would be the preference. I like the second rug--the whimsy and colors are more subdued. I think that would be my first choice, with towels in a very pale blue like the MBR bedding. The moss green cover is beautiful, but I don't think that color, in particular, needs to be picked up further in the bath, other than the orchid pot.

As an added note, I always find my local Home Goods has the best/more unusual color choices for towels. My guess is that if the colors are outside of standard colors, they end up at HG.

eta, the seat cushion might be the easiest way to incorporate moss green--you'd more likely find fabric in that color than perhaps towels.

Thanks Feathers, I now have an official excuse to go to Home Goods! : )

Love the new countertop, that wood tone blends beautifully with the floor. It’s hard to evaluate rugs online because the colors IRL are often different. I think you’d be fine with any one of them.

Your room looks great. I agree that any of those rugs will be beautiful. My preference is ( was?) the leopard but after seeing your mock ups I think I really like #2.

((but really any of them will be a winner))

I really like it - It looks way better than I envisioned when I suggested it and thanks for the shout-out. It took me a while to decide to open this post because of the MBA part didn't make sense, but my curiosity got the better of me.

As to incorporating the colors, I think adding the green in plants would be nice and then blue in towels maybe? As to rugs I think I would go with something similar in color to the painted wood work (vanity). That would bring some of that down to the floor. However that said, I'm not one for wild patterns and like things fairly monotone with a few pops of color. Love the master colors with the pop of green.

I love the leopard one too, although I am not enttirely sure the blue shade of the border works. But the rug is so fab that you should (Im sorry) repaint if necessary .

It's not that I don't like leopards, but that one kinda...sorta...reminds me of road kill. SPLAT. Don't hate me!

I also like the mirror you have and in fact I read not long ago they're coming back in style. And look at the gorgeous reflection it gives.

It's looking great! Can't wait to see the finished product. I like @Feathers11 suggestions and agree that just the smallest touch of the green will be enough.

Most of what I ordered to try has arrived but we are in Maine for a few days so haven't been able to play. I did pick up some plain light blue handtowels to try.

    Salonva et al,

The second rug is a Rifle Paper design. Several rugs and cue pillows too here : https://www.burkedecor.com/collections/rifle-paper-co-x-loloi?page=2

My first choice is the leopard, but if it doesn't look right and I don't like the other two, I may order the Rifle one.

LOL Oakley, it does look like "splat" but I think it is purposely cartoonish since real hides are out of style (or at least can be controversial). I don't think antique mirror was that common, not sure it was ever in or out of style. But I don't want to pay 3x the cost of a standard mirror for the third time, when I think many would dislike it. To be clear (haha), the antiquing I haveis only on the edges ... it does not hamper seeing yourself.

Feathers, I tried the b/w print but the size was wrong for the spot.

    HU-,

Grumpy much? First, the wood counter is treated. I have had wooden countertops in my K, including surrounding the sink, for over a decade. Not an issue.

Second, yes I know it is not traditional and not what everyone would want. My goal was just to redo the counter, not redo the whole bath.

No way I would give it up for a double vanity, plus we do not need it. The MBR suite has 2 baths so unless we are going all Big Love, I don't need a double sink in mine. My vanity was custom built with ample storage; cabinets on both sides (one of them a foot deep) and drawers on the sides underneath. It is pretty generous bathroom real estate for one person . (these pics from my NYTimes Organizing binge)

(Still waiting on the mirror btw ...) ANd one of the rugs

OKAY, I thought I ordered the 3x5 leopard rug but I only ordered the 2x3. I find the color a little too dark (and for now the edges are still curled up). It is also too small, but the 3x5 might be very bossy. It is also not at all bathroomy, which is ok because neither is my bathroom, but it might be good to add in more white in this part of the BA. Should I order the larger one to try, or not?

The runner looks better. The size is perfect, it is a little more bathroom-y (with a fair amount of white). Less exciting though.

PS excuse the towels, I need to call in Martha Stewart's production staff to fold them correctly for me

I think the runner is a little too wishy-washy, for me. It looks like the poor cousin to the rest of the space. I like the leopards coloring on my phone, it doesnt look too dark, but IRL could be different.

    mtnrdredux_gw thanked localeater

ILR I don't think it's wishy washy. In fact, the background is a white and taupe stripe that is quite prominent IRL

I still like the leopard-- but YOU would need to love it because it IS going to be bossy.

I am not a fan of the runner. It is cute but from the photo, it feels like it brings down the luxe level. It may be different IRL?

I think I would give the burke decor rug a try before deciding.

    mtnrdredux_gw thanked Funkyart

    IRL is often different.

OK I will order the bigger leopard and give it a go. Meantime, for anyone else crushing on leopard rugs, I found an adorable pink one on Overstock, and, oddly, the Anthro one is also sold on Am@zon!, for $100 less?

Love the runner! Colors, size, pattern….tick, tick tick.

    mtnrdredux_gw thanked Kswl

I like the runner too. The tiger draws attention away from your counter area, and bigger will draw it even more.

    mtnrdredux_gw thanked Allison0704

Thank you ladies, the larger tiger arrives soon. We shall see. I think the biggest issue is that the runner is the perfect size/aspect ratio and it seems on Anthro and Urban make that size (~2x5).

I think I am less then enthusiastic bec I already own it in another color way!

Oddly, my Robshaw mat is still not here. NM is so slow!

Is there some reason this Nic Cage rug won’t work? The scale is good, it’s neutral.

You can get matching pillows and shower curtain, too.

Mtn! Come back! I was kidding!

    (It would be unique, though.)

I like the runner. i find the tiger is too much of a statement and takes away from the beautiful counter.

Oh yes.. the runner is the only size that works. I do still like the tiger -- but i like some incongruity-- but it clearly doesn't fit well.

Just love the room. I'd have a hard time leaving the tub1

I do have a hard time leaving the tub; mainly because it can be hard to get out of when you are slippery, LOL!
