need help picking backsplash

We are redoing our kitchen. Here are pictures of our countertop and island cabinet color. Perimeter cabinets will be white. Island cabinets will be SW Evergreen fog. I feel like I kind of already got a lot going on so I’m not sure which backsplash to go with.

Wait until your cabinets are painted white...whites can read a lot of tones ;) Are you planning on installing tile above the short splash that you already have? I would not. Please post a larger picture of your kitchen.

I love the countertop, what is it? Is it possible to do backsplash same as countertop? Or a 3x6 light gray glass subway tile? L

@lucky998877 we won’t have that short splash. This is just a pic from the countertop place. We’re remodeling the house before moving in so I’ll have to take a picture of the kitchen layout when I get over there again.

@marylut the countertop is called silver cloud. It’s a level 1 granite. Something with gray could be nice. I guess I’m just wondering do I need to somehow tie in the green that’ll be on the island with the backsplash?

I love the green for island. Not sure how it goes with the gray counter. I would not put a green tile with that granite.

    What exactly are you planning?

Personally I like idea when color

The blue tiles pick up the blue island.

Are you set with the granite?

@eld6161 love that blue island. Countertops are set, we already ordered and they’ll be in next Friday. I was considering maybe a backsplash like this.

How does that relate to the counter? For me it is too many elements. Busy gray counter, kind of busy green backsplash. The two don't complement each other. Then a green island with the gray granite.

Personally, I would rethink the green island and do a light gray or stick with white.

Notice how that BS is paired with a solid counter.

the countertops cannot be changed and the island is already being painted. I absolutely love the green for the island. Do you have an idea what type of backsplash would work? I thought that white stone backsplash would be a safe pick.

Agree, wait til all the elements are in. We don't know what shades of white/green you are using. Then bring samples home and check them in your lighting.

Agree to see the elements in place before choosing - I would think an uber-simple white or black tile could work, but avoid anything that would compete with the counter

We just put a mini kitchen in our basement using that granite and white cabinets. Here is a link to the tile we used for the back splash: https://www.tilebar.com/enigma-white-2x8-polished-ceramic-tile.html you can see up close that each tile is a little different from each other. Hope that helps!

If you tear out that existing backsplash, also remove the 4" piece of backsplash.

Have been reading some current design mags that suggest a short splash varying in height from 2” upwards, apparently trending.

The granite is super pretty! Definitely wait until everything is done before making a final choice on backsplash. I do think you’ll have to resist the urge to make your backsplash look special. Let it recede. Look at a bunch of kitchen photos and notice that in general the backsplash and countertop won’t BOTH be eye-catching. One or the other.

The white stone is still too busy because there is variation of color AND size AND height of the little tiles.

    How about this?

Do a very plain backsplash - white or light gray subway that blends with the countertops. The countertop is the boss of your kitchen. Don’t fight with it. You can paint the island - and repaint it later if you want to change the color. If you have color in your backsplash, you’re stuck with that color.

That’s not their kitchen! That’s a display photo

What et phonehome did is nice. Subtle but not boring. You do NOT need a dramatic backsplash with that granite. Simple is good in this case.

What about something like this? I do agree backsplash should be simple. White subway tile scares me a little though. We have white vinyl at our house now for a backsplash and over the course of 10 years it has definitely shown some staining from things like oil splatter from cooking, etc. I don’t want something I’ll have to constantly be wiping clean.

No on the sample just above. To me, it’s busy fighting with the beautiful countertop you choose.

Showcase that countertop. Put up a plain white-ish backsplash that won’t battle for attention. And you won’t have to worry about the color kind-of matching the veins in your granite AND kind-of blending with the green island.

I noticed that you are worried about the staining aspect for white tiles. If you get ceramic or porcelain or glass tiles they will not stain nearly as easily as vinyl so I don't think that should be a huge concern. Behind the stove they will get dirty but so will anything else you choose. You just need wipe it down but it shouldn't stain if it sits there for a few minutes / days. I would definitely not get anything marble if you're worried about that because not only will marble fight with your counter aesthetically but it will absorb any dirt that gets in it and that will stain

You can always buy a tile or t two of the tiles you are thinking about and get them dirty and then try to clean them and see how they do before you make a final decision :)

Yea I really like the look of those stone tiles but I don’t even know how you would scrub that since it’s not a smooth surface. I didn’t realize glass won’t absorb stains like vinyl does. I’m probably leaning toward a glass white subway tile.

I had the same granite in my last kitchen. We went with a very light gray 3x6 ceramic tile. Chantilly lace upper cabinets. It looked very nice.

Ok so countertops are in. Still missing some cabinet doors obviously. The floors are not my favorite, but those could be replaced down the road. For now this is a huge improvement from how the kitchen looked when we bought the house. Here is a before and after. Anymore ideas for the backsplash?

I’d look into getting those floors professionally cleaned. Nice improvement.

What a transformation!!! Someone earlier mentioned lighting - very important in the b/s selection process. Reco that all your lighting (including undercab!!!) be LED 4000k - the closest to daylight. This will give you the best idea of how your whites will (or won't) work together. As others have mentioned, your gorgeous counters are the hero in your kitchen. Your cabs & b/s will read as one element to your eye as they're on the same visual plain. Go for a grout as close to the tile as possible rather than contrasting which would compete with the counter.

Looks great so far but the floor is throwing me off.

@Theresa I feel the same way about the floors, but I didn’t want to make any decisions based on the floors knowing they will be replaced eventually.

Because the floor is staying for a while, enjoy the color as adding needed warmth to balance the cool palette. Definitely give the floor and floor grout a serious washing.

Any options for the backsplash yet?

Green is a great colour to go with those floors (counter, island paint), but now we see that you already have two stars - the counter and the floor. You absolutely need to do either ceramic (not glass) plain white tile, or do nothing at all. Whatever you do, don't do it now. As everyone above has said, wait until it's all in and almost done before making a backsplash choice.
