Looking for help with entryway

Here is our mess of an entryway.. it needs serious TLC and I’ll take any and all constructive criticism. For context, we have a few young children and a dog. We do have a small mud room off the garage, but it’s not very big. We really only use the mud room if coming in from my car. Everyone uses this front door and we have the grandparents over almost daily to help w childcare, so this gets a lot of foot traffic. I was hoping for help styling it functionally. Looking for a place to stash quite a bit of shoes (daily guests) plus the dog leash and bags etc , as well as ideally a place to hide umbrellas and the daily accumulation of stuff
My original idea was a new bench on the left, and then a skinny open console table on the right with baskets underneath but I am second guessing and please rip this place apart - I hate the entryway and I need help and criticism. Our style is I suppose transitional? PB and RH esque. The room immediately behind the bench is our Children’s playroom so ideally nothing too breakable (like no glass tables) as there are lots of flying soccer balls and such 😒🤣 thanks in advance.

can you cut into the children's playroom with a proper closet for hanging coats and storage?

If not, how about a ready made unit that would include a bench and coat hooks, some baskets. Pottery Barn offers some.

Are you able to post a to-scale floorplan that shows the main floor? I like Lyn's idea of building into the kids playroom. Is there no hall closet at the moment and that's why everything is at the front door?

I love this PB stuff! Hubby is anti cubby because he doesn’t want to block the transom windows 😑
We do have a coat closet - my apologies; I should have mentioned that. Here it is- back left of this pic. It’s just at the end of the hallway where it connects to the kitchen/dining/living space… The coat closet currently also stores the vacuum and the diaper bags etc…. So we do have a place to put coats, but it’s mostly just the shoe and dog clutter that builds up by the door. I think it will get easier once the kids are older but for right now it drives me absolutely nuts

Also - I want to replace That floor cabinet in the above photo… When we moved into this house we just re-used a lot of the stuff from my old house since we just had a baby / gotten pregnant again but now that we’ve been here for almost 2 years, it’s time to formally address the entry

here is RH entryway décor. I would go with it literally with oversized round mirror and some similar console plus lamps, wall art, décor. Place it by the wall just exactly opposite your arch.

And I would get longer and wider runner.

The right side of the door there's a plug pass the entry to that other room and you could put a consult there so what reflects into the other room and a bench could go decided closer to the front entry like beside the cabinet

I made a round mirror over a console and the bench to the side

Hi Megan, do you have a closet organizer on the back of your coat closet? We installed hooks on the back of our coat closet door to hang leashes and bags for dogs. This was inexpensive and hugely functional. Also, there are some cute benches that also provide shoe storage with a tilt out drawer. I don’t have a link to post but they are available through a variety of manufacturers.

Thank you everyone for all the ideas!!! I never thought to switch out the furniture order but I think y’all are right - it would make it so much more functional! I am taking inspo from every reply and starting to shop this weekend - THANK YOU!

Thank you again for all the help! Just ordered all the new stuff this weekend …. Putting a new bench where the console cabinet is now (that cabinet will be moved to another room). Got a larger rug (facepalm. Can’t believe I never noticed How poorly sized this one was but now I can’t unsee it) and new
console table to put on the wall on the right. Moving arch mirror to the wall above the new console table. Thanks again!
