He was a bit before my time, but I did collect his music. He was one of my favorites from that era.

He outlived Bobby Vee, who was several years younger.

One of my young teenage heartthrobs. Volare! Oh oh.

He lived around the corner from us later in his career. A nondescript house. I never met him but evidently he was a regular at the local restaurants and also a regular at the Catholic church.

Wild One, Palisade Park. I was a big fan of the old Bandstand

I loved him. Haven't thought of him in years. Sorry to hear, but he had a nice long life and hopefully the knowledge that he made many of our lives richer through his music. And cuteness!

Was there any big star who didn't appear on Ed Sullivan's show?

And he played Hugo Peabody - Ann-Margret's boyfriend - in Bye Bye Birdie.

I mentioned Bye Bye Birdie earlier. Small bit of personal familiarity for me, the scene linked just above was filmed at a school I went to.

From the posts I see on FB and just general comments I have seen, he was apparently a super nice regular guy. I do remember his name and some of his music ( and definitely Bye Bye Birdie which I loved).

    Rest in peace

Before my time but I knew all his music from my sister who was 8 years older. How the words to his songs and so many others way before my time are stuck in my brain is a mystery to me!

Rydell High School was in "Grease".

He would have turned 80 in a few weeks.

Just figured I would link his wiki page to have his songs, history, etc.

Great talent and seems like his head was on straight compared to how some others fared. He seemed to stick to his roots, which is pretty cool in my book.

“Rydell High School was in ’Grease’.”

Never heard of him but I did hear on the news in the background that the Grease high school was named after him.

Of course I heard of him, and I know many of the songs, but (and this is true for me for many songs and artists) I never connected his name to the songs. Such a satin voice.

A little before my time too, but once the song was mentioned, I recognized it. I have never heard of Bye, Bye Birdie.

Hubby met and played the same venues with Rydell on tour in the 90s and says he was a really pleasant person.

Before my time, but I recognize a bit of "Volare" from a commercial maybe? And any time you read about a celebrity who has kept their head on straight, it makes me smile. So my condolences to his fans.

He seemed like a nice guy, but he did have a serious drinking problem, which he wrote about in his 2016 memoir. He overcame it, too.

we sure had good music back then. loved Bandstand. we watched it every day. Bye Bye Birdie was the 1st movie I ever went to. I'm sure his name is on a 45 or 2 that I still have. In more recent yrs there was a show on RFDTV with singers from back then on it. it was probably taped a decade or so prior to when I saw it. they sang their hit songs and shared some of their memories. they still sounded good to me in their very much older yrs.

So many singers from his era (1959-1964) were Italian-American, including Fabian and Frankie Avalon (who I think were also from Philadelphia), but Bobby Rydell was my favorite of those, although I had more Bobby Vee albums, and he stood out for not being Italian!

One of the Bobby Rydell albums I have has a picture frame on the cover with a cut-out, so that you can slide out one 12"x12" photo of him and see another one underneath. So many albums back then had huge face photos of the singers, and I remember that my older sister's friends would kiss the covers. I thought that was a bit silly, but then I never understood teenage girls.

Bobby Rydell was one year and four days older than Bobby Vee, and they had a lot in common with regard to their lifestyles. I think they both married childhood sweethearts.

I did not start buying records until the Beatles era, but I did buy a lot of oldies once I did.

That bio I linked mentions that Avalon, Fabian,James Darren and Rydell were close friends from early on, and that Rydell had a liver and kidney transplant in 2012.

I was born September '61. I suppose I didn't really know anything of him until 1970-ish??? KISS didn't latch onto me until '74/75! 😇😛

I imagine I heard him on the radio when we were in the car. Dad liked all the Classic Crooners like that! I always liked Dean Martin. Dad had 8-track tapes of him, Faron Young, etc.....

In the 70's, I loved Bandstand too! When I listened to "Oldies" stations/programs, I LOVED Elvis, Rydell, & on & on. Good stuff!!!🥰🥰🥰

Country-music.......I'll be nice & just say "I'm allergic" to it. I grew up farming, but I'm no Hick! If you can picture Ace Frehley of KISS driving a big Steiger Tractor, that would be Faron!!! 😇🤪
