Emailed you regarding Tajique...!

Ive had Marianne saved on my HMF wishlist for a couple of years now.

Not much info out there.

Any chance it could handle only 4-5 hours of sun a day?

Probably. Its a once-bloomer, so it doesn't have the same needs for light as a repeater. But it will be floppy in lower light situations, so be prepared to support it.

It was such a strange summer this year in the Willamette Valley. There were all kinds crop failures due to the late start. I'm sorry Marianne was one of the crop failures. It's so wonderful that root it each year for folks to have the chance to grow it, Paul. It's a star in my garden.

I'm so happy I got mine! It's been growing steadily &hopefully I'll get a bloom or two in Spring!

@sautesmom Sacramento Carla, I'm sure you will get a few blooms this spring. This rose starts to flower while quite small. I'd say about half of the 1 year old band-size plants flower before I've sold them.

Does 'Marianne' share the gallica tendency to sucker? (Mind you, this would not be a problem -- from everything I've read, it looks like the kind of rose one would always want more of!)

@Ross 5b IA Marianne doesn't sucker at all. Zero. Zilch. It just makes a big, robust shrub...when the deer don't eat it, lol. In my case, Marianne is right beside a well-travelled deer path through my garden. I've had to put up a netting of invisible fishing line around her. I'm *hoping* to get blooms next Spring. On the bright side, since she's been deer-pruned at least twice, she's VERY bushy, lol.

P.S. Marianne is everything you've read, and more. She's one of Paul's top roses, Mel's Heritage being the other contender for #1. And that's saying something. I have six of Paul's roses, all gems.

@Ross 5b IA As John/Fig stated, 'Marianne' does not sucker. Its only 1/4 Gallica in pedigree, really, and so its lost that trait. I wouldn't mind if it did sucker though - it would make my job of propagating it a lot easier.

Hello, I'm new here, just pop in to ask a question about this beautiful rose, I’m in zone 10, can I grow this rose here.

@SoCalGardenNut I'm sure Paul will check in with a more definitive answer, since he created/hybridized Marianne. I'm much too far from you zone-wise to make a recommendation. I'll just say that in Z7 Marianne is stellar, and one of my all-time favorite roses.

In general, gallicas need winter chill to set buds. But Marianne is only 1/4 gallica. And I see on the HelpMeFind page for gardens where Marianne is grown that there are several listed in California. You might join HMF if you're not already a member, and then you can message those gardeners in warm areas to ask what their personal experience is.

Thanks @fig_insanity Z7b E TN, I did check on HelpmeFind and one person in SF, CA has some photos of Marianne, unfortunately I’m a lot warmer than SF, it’s considered zone 9 up there.

@SoCalGardenNut If you get no appreciable chill in the winter where you are, its unlikely 'Marianne' would prosper there. It might grow well, but bloom very little, if at all. But honestly, I don't know for sure. You'd need to find someone in a very similar climate who has actually grown it. My USDA 8 climate suits it perfectly.

Thank You @User, i have a hard time getting some roses to bloom here like Charles de Mills and Tuscany Superb, maybe they dont grow here as well.

@SoCalGardenNut Yeah, those are hard core Gallicas and they require a certain amount of winter chill to flower. Those roses are notorious for not flowering in warm climates

Paul do you know if you have any other roses that are extremely resistant to blackspot like Mel’s heritage? Mel’s heritage is my top rambler/climber with great health, extraordinary rebloom and fragrance. I can do without fragrance and even rebloom if I have a fantastic spring bloom and good disease resistance the rest of the warm season. Just checking with you so even if you don’t have any right now I can keep an eye out for a certain variety.

@dianela7analabama I'm very impressed with how you've trained your 'Mel's Heritage', thank you for sharing the photos.

As for other varieties - do you mean specifically roses bred by me, or ?

I have several other roses that were bred in the last three years I was doing new work that are currently in the queue for naming and propagation: after ten years of watching how they performed, I've identified a few varieties that do extremely well under difficult circumstances. But it will be at least a year before I distribute plants of any of these.

2022 was a terrible year for propagating roses. Our summer started a month late, and then temps shot into the 90s, which is the worst scenario for newly struck cuttings. Most everything I attempted to propagate this year died, except a few plants of 'Allegra', which I will have available in April 2023. 'Allegra' is pretty much bulletproof as well.

Thank you Paul. Yes I was inquiring into roses bred by you specifically or that you are distributing. I look forward to hopefully having the chance of purchasing some of those newer varieties in the future when they are available. I am sorry to hear things didn’t do well in 2022 but Allegra is certainly a beauty. She most be really tough to have survived, do you have any I can purchase from you? I am happy to pay now and receive it whenever you are ready to ship in 2023.

I do grow Joyce Barden, it’s sent by mistake by RVR, a beautiful mistake i might add, it’s in the shadiest area, not sure about black spot, but I'm in California and its dry.

@SoCalGardenNut That's a fine specimen of it you have there! Nicely grown. It likes warmer, drier climates then mine, so you appear to be having a better experience with it than I do up here. Here, it gets blackspot fairly badly.

@ligii, i ordered Jude the Obscure from RVR and they sent me this. it took me 1 year to realize i didnt have the right rose.

@User, i love the egg yolk color of this rose. i had to search RVR database to find out its name base on the description.

Just an update! 

My Marianne has two little rose buds, I hope will grow into two big roses soon!

@sautesmom Sacramento Carla, I've learned not to count my buds until they've "hatched", lol. Here in wood-rat country, it seems Marianne is a favorite of Bambi and his ilk. Last year I lost every single bud on Marianne to a one night rampage. Every.single.bud.

But I wish you the very best of luck. There are few roses any more beautiful than Marianne.

I got a beautiful eMarriane from them but they have sent some mislabeled roses in the past.

Oh boy! She should be opening up maybe in the next two weeks. The weather here can’t decide how it’s feeling. We had two days of 80 degree weather that the roses loved but now we are going back into cloudy 60 degree weather.

I think it’s safe to say that this is Marianne? Absolutely glowing as her bloom opens! I’ll photograph it again once fully opened.

My Marianne foliage today… is this something I can treat? Foliage is a bit red or orange in places. Gets a lot of sun and it’s been hot.

I was going to transplant it in the ground out of its pot this year but I ran out of energy when it was nice and the weather has not been cooperating on my days off, so it's still in its pot.

It will get a new home after it's done blooming.

I bought three of them last year from Paul, and am about to see the first bloom. In pictures it's supremely beautiful. He sent some Dakota Redwing cuttings which all rooted so I have ten plants of it. Have not seen that one bloom yet. My Oshun plant , which is only a couple of years old, is loaded with great big buds. I really like his roses.

I'm pretty disappointed to see my Marianne  turning white a couple days after opening. It's still smells delicious but what I really liked were the apricot swirly colors.
