Spring maintenance for hydrangeas

I have a dozen or so hydrangeas in the front of our house that collect tons of leaves late fall and winter. I have two questions: 1) they haven’t been divided in 15 years- do I even start? They are huge and the thought of trying to divide them makes me move on to other things every year: 2) any ideas how to remove the leaves in the middle of them? Aside from risking loss of an eyeball and pulling each leaf out individually? Or maybe should I just leave them there? Thank you!!!

Where are you located and what kind of hydrangeas are they?

Hydrangeas are considered woody shrubs and unlike herbaceous perennials, shrubs are generally not divided. It's not impossible....just not recommended.

You can leave the leaves. They'll do no harm and help mulch the plant.

Zone 6. They are the kind that grow on old wood. That’s great news then. I’ll leave them be. Also great news about the leaves. Thanks for both of your comments!
