We are getting ready to renovate our basement after waterproofing the exterior earlier this year. The one side had old knotty pine paneling in the walls and carpet over old vinyl tiles which had deteriorated due to years of moisture penetration. We’ve removed everything, but we are unsure how to best approach the floor and walls. We want to put in porcelain floor tile and insulation/drywall for the walls. The flooring has black mastic on it with several small chunks missing in areas. The walls have what we can only imagine is a very old interior waterproofing layer that is crumbling. We’re tested both things for asbestos and both came back negative. We’re unsure how well floor tile will adhere to the mastic and the best way to address the small chunks missing (can they just be filled in or should we do SLC for the whole floor) and then how to attach rigid foam board insulation to the black layer that is there and since the walls are not smooth (areas have mortar sticking out). Any advice? Thanks!
