shutter color choice

Hi! What color shutter would you put on our super old home in Europe? I will paint the door to match or coordinate. I’m between a duck egg blue or a navy blue or maybe a dark turquoise. Eek! She’s had a total refresh inside and I’m going for lovely, updated classic.

I'm not recommending blue. Consider a B.M. Historic color like Somerville Red for the front door (notice in photo how well it goes with the accents) and B.M. Racoon Fur for the shutters.

As for the garage door, consider matching the color of the stone and using it in a gloss finish. I think it will balance out the lower level of the house.

dark turquoise sounds fun... any blues you like, they'll go great with the roof... compliment, opposity on the color wheel.

I would just refresh with the same color or bronze.

Love the idea of blue. The brown is so boring on this dwelling.

You need window boxes with flowers, too!

I’d look up Farrow & Ball for inspiration pictures. Lots of wonderful European stone buildings with examples.

There’s also a UK Houzz site/discussion boards you could get advice on. Bit more creativity over there. :)

    Lulworth Blue:

    Blue Gray:

    Hague Blue:

    Lichen:

I have some more saved, will post them in a bit.

I like the idea of the front door in one of these light, neutral colors, and the shutters in a blue or green.

    And window boxes. ;)

I follow F&B on Instagram, as well as Edward Bulmer. Look through his colors, too. So many beautiful ones that may inspire. If not on IG, just do a web search.

As much as I love turquoise, I like Chloebud's choices of green even more. Garage door to match stone color.

Also, the building next door is red; red & green are complementary colors. You are stuck on the same block so that tips in favor of using green.

Playing around. Blue would look fantastic.

Front door is F&B Stony Ground.

I love how this looks …

ETA: I accidentally cut off the red next door. Here’s how they look together, not that I think it matters. I’d do whatever color you want, not worry about the red.

Here is another option without shutters. Black on the windows.

I hope the OP comes back, I think this house is so cool. Would love to see what they decide.

I miss living in Europe. :)

Okay we have taken down the shutters for now (they look so sad and many are so damaged!) and I’m considering painting the windows a dark gray or a color to match the door (whatever color it ends up). We will change the roof next year when we expand into the attic so I’m not worried about that. I looove so many of these color options!

What is the color above Lichen in the pics? I’ve been at the house with the F&B paint book trying to see which I prefer! It’s so hard! I’ll post a picture when it’s done! Still happy for ideas!

They have it as Green Smoke on their sites (main and Instagram), but if you’re considering it, I’d ask them about it. I mean, different lighting can change colors, of course, but it seems very different than other Green Smoke photos.

This is what I did! It goes nicely with the red house next door. It’s a happy door!

Should I white wash the stones around the windows?

What a beautiful building! Instead of whitewashing I would suggest cleaning the stone especially around the windows that previously had shutters. Would suggest a good scrub with a bristle brush and a mild detergent. Would definitely not powerwash as that can damage the mortar and cause water infiltration. Once again - lovely home!!!
