Marble floor tile discoloration

Hi - first time posting here. I had grey bardiglio tiles installed in my bathroom floor in a checkered pattern with white marble tiles (grey is polished, white is honed). Tilework seems excellent generally but the grey tiles are “cloudy” and discolored, particularly along the perimeter. On some of the tiles the discoloration is in a square. anyone know what this is? Moisture from grouting that might go away (it has already been 4 weeks so not hopeful)? Mortar showing through because of poor tile quality? Wrong mortar choice?

Marble is generally a bad choice for floors and shower floors. It WILL absorb moisture and darken in almost all cases. You either live with it or use porcelain tiles for this application.

The marble did not darken. It lightened. And it was primarily the grey tiles around the walls that have the lighter areas.

Hmm, that's a tough one without knowing how it was installed and having that marble in my hands. There are some issues with the quality of some marble these days (coming from a variety of sources) and we require that we "approve" the selection before we install it. That being said, your contractor has weighed in? If they are unsure, perhaps they could have a professional marble/stone restoration company give it a look. Might be able to use a poltice application? Will respectfully disagree with Stonetech/Avanti about never using marble on floors, shower or other. It's been done for centuries and we install a LOT of marble. Proper materials, prep, and quality of marble all come into play.
