Hosta On stage requirements

It is going to be largish hosta so I do not want to ou it front row. My beds are under mature oaks which while pruned this year still will create decent shade.

I do not want to create design where all greens and blues are in the back and all yellows in the front.

Help?

If there is decent shade, it seems to me you could plant blues greens yellows margined all in this area, mixing it up as you like. No reason to put greens and blues in back. Many blues can be large, but others are small. For instance Prairie Sky, Halcyon, Yankee Blue, Astril Bliss, Blue ME, Waterslide, are medium. You could plant On Stage in back with some other yellow hostas, such as Sum & Substance or greens like Krossa Regal or nicely variegated plants like Dream Queen. It’s really up to you what you like. But, let me say this===>> beware the Maple roots………they can be a real challenge. I know, I also have one…….. :-)

Thankfully no maples here. I made sure not to buy house with them lol.

I love golds. I am hesitatnt because I am not quite sure how much sun they might need here. I moved about full zone up. I remember seeing beautiful hostas in full sun in WI at convention couple of years back.

im not sure im buying what deanna's selling.. unless you have high quality soil.. and you can drown them ... chicago is the midwest.. not MN or WI ...

is OS one of those come up early and get damaged by cold hosta?... if so.. site it appropriately ...

It's the late one.....can take alot of sun. I'm in 5b and most of my hostas get all day sun no issues

I hear ya and lived your confusion OP! Trial and error were my only constants. 20+ years later Ken is still correct. The soil you have makes a HUGE difference. As we use mom's stock to fill in my offspring's yards I see now how great I had it. 100 yrs of falling burr oak leaves left me with amazing soil. Theirs in SD and ND just don't grow like mine in MN.
