Is this clump form or tree? I wouldn’t put it so close to the paving. Its shallow roots are eventually going to make it harder to underplant, and you’ll probably want room for other plants along the walkway. Plus you don’t want lopsided branch trimming just to keep the walk clear. A little more breathing room will let that beauty flourish!

If your lot line is on the left edge of the flower bed, you do not have the space for any tree. Possible a crepe myrtle of some dwarf lilacs.

Based on the pavers it looks like the lot is about 10' to 12' feet wide. Even those cute little Japanese Maple will eventually spread across that area and beyond.

If you are looking for year around color and in an environment like eastern North Carolina then nandina will and color to the area through out the year, and it does not get very tall.

I think we need some clarification from the OP. Is a Japanese maple other than the one visible under consideration? If so, there are many cultivars of JM's that will fit in that space. There are even a couple of columnar ones that will never get very wide. And many other dwarf forms will stay relatively narrow in spread as well.

But that is not an overly desirable setting for any JM. They are by nature woodland understory trees and do best with at least partial shade, especially protection from hot afternoon sun. That looks to be a mostly full sun siting and depending on your location, may just be too stressful for a JM to thrive.

that bed is already full .. you have no more room for much of anything ... besides an annual ground cover of something ...

^^^ It was not clear where in the front garden the OP was intending to plant a Japanese maple. Since the small entry bed is full, it seems reasonable to expect the tree would be placed out in the small expanse of lawn.

And the upper limit of a zone 8 has no relevance. That ONLY reflects winter cold, so obviously if the tree can survive a zone 5 winter, it can survive a zone 8 winter!! It has NO bearing on any other growing conditions beyond expected winter cold. JM's are found in all manner of climates, including southern California and in Florida, both in zones higher than 8.

Japanese maple need trimming but we were too late in the season to do it. Was not going to stress the tree. Thank you, I am.in Ontario.
