There is a lot of root exposure on the one with the brown patch.......what's up with that? And what kind of boxwoods are they?

The plant tags survived the winter. Should be easy enough to determine the precise selection of boxwood they have.

I raked out a lot of leaves a couple days ago that I used for insulation so I think I took away the top layer of soil as well by accident. I will add more soil and mulch soon

i cant really tell from the pix if it is off season red green growth that will turn green or... browning.. and i dont know where you are..

give it a few more weeks .. and if it browns more.. just properly prune it out ... and see what the season brings in regards to summer growth vigor ... it may just fill in ...

if not.. replace it in fall ...

the only caveat.. if its right out the front door and its going to drive you insane every time you see it.. just get rid of it now ...

all that brick and cement might make it a very hard place to winter over evergreen shrubs... but again.. i dont know where you are ... give us a big city name ...

IMO a weird place for a hedge so maybe pics from further back but I would trim it out now. To me it is damaged and the plant will keep trying to fix it so that one will continue to be smaller .I agree they are too close to that stone wall and unless facing due north that will get way too hot for evergreens

Box, tolerates a wide variety of light conditions. It is quite capable of taking full sun in most places.

Sorry, but this statement has no basis in reality.

Cut the dead part out. Recover the roots of all of the plants. Make sure they are get sufficient water.

^^^ While a reasonable guess, Sprinter boxwood is reputed to be blight resistant. In fact, that and extended cold hardiness seem to be its claim to fame!

Had the same thing happen last year, I cut out the brown added more good soil around the base, fertalized and it filled in nicely. Does take about a year to do so.
