Bamboo is a not a tree. It is a very large growing grass. There is both a running type of bamboo and a clumping type. Clumpers can be safely planted in the ground outside without worry of foundation damage or taking over neighboring properties. Running bamboos can also be planted in the ground IF a proper containment barrier is used.

Either type can be grown in a container, although the running type will need more frequent attention.....just as it would if planted in the ground.

Which type of bamboo might work best for you will depend on what the purpose is for planting. Privacy screening? Accent planting? How tall do you want it to get. Have you done much container growing? Why do you think bamboo is your best choice?

Thank you for your comment, I used to live in tropical country and have bamboo and palm tree. The reason I’m thinking to plant it in container because of what I read about how invasive bamboo can spread and ruin the foundation. Would like to plant it around my drive way and on my backyard.

If you go to any online bamboo retailer, they should list species by clumping or running. Then you can see what clumpers they have available for your zone. You don't need to buy from them, but they will give you a good idea of what types are for sale and will work. You should have lots of choices for your zone.

(They will get bigger in the ground than in containers which is why I recommend the clumping varieties. Bamboo is more fun when it's allowed to get big, right?)

As Fori noted, clumping bamboos are perfectly safe to plant anywhere in your garden without concerns for aggressive spreading or any foundation or paving damage. They behave like most ornamental grasses and just slowly increase in girth.

All the Fargesia species are clumpers and can be grown in a very wide range of climates but there are other clumping varieties as well.
