@Mischievous Magpie (CO 5b) Here’s a shot of a pink Indigo bloom on a traveling upshoot in a drier year. My Indigo lives Portland where most everything turns quite purple due to slightly acid soil and cool, cloudy springtimes.

My 8th-year own-root Duchess de Rohan smells good, but she's spreading wide with suckers all over. I prefer your tall & non-suckering Jacques Cartier.

@strawchicago z5 I love DdR! That fragrance! I grew DdR in my last garden where she didn’t sucker dramatically. Your comments are a good reminder to see how my current start of DdR spreads as time passes. None of my JCs have ever spread through stolons popping up around the mother plant. My guess is that if JC ever does spread, it will spread rarely, mildly and not far from the home base. Not like Charles de Mills. Sending bunny battle sympathy!

@portlandmysteryrose Well I'm prepared to be surprised, but I'm having a hard time imagining this bud eventually opening up into any color resembling what "Indigo" should be. Obviously it's not a pristine bud but that's the only one I've got right now:

@Mischievous Magpie (CO 5b) That bud does look suspiciously pale, but I’d withhold deciding until it opens. I once got an almost white bud and bloom on a brand new Queen of Denmark that has bloomed true pink ever since. Hopefully, your Indigo is correct. If not, and you can’t find another one, I grow a traveling Indigo and could pot up some stolons and try to root them for you. I needed to tie up a bunch of stuff today, like climbing Jacques C, but all I did was remove rotted blooms and take and post pictures on the forum. I dread slogging into the mass of tangled, thorny canes!

Madame Hardy before the endless rains of the last week and a half melted all her blooms. It would have been a spectacular flush, but the blooms just melt under all this rain. At least she still looks good at a distance!

Thanks Portland Carol. I'm not taking many up close pictures of MH since the blooms only last about a day in these rains before they melt/fall apart. At least MH doesn't seem quite as prone to botrytis as some other roses. What a season this year.

Rose de Rescht

Rose de Rescht is a great rose for a rainy place. My one year old own root has done so well in this super wet year. No blackspot. No mildew. No botrytis. No melting blooms. Yours is gorgeous, Oursteelers.

I just added some Autumn Damask roses to the garden this year. Here are some pictures of the first bloom.

Librarian - wonderful roses...your Madam Hardy is incredible!! I had no idea it was that floriferous! Drat about the rain ruining them. What a shame. Your unknown rose is gorgeous!!

@oursteelers 8B PNW and @librarian_gardner_8b_pnw I third the vote for RdR as a really good, wet springtime rose. I’m so happy you both grow it, too. We need some raspberry Damask cheer after the onslaught! My plant is so big now that it’s a great relief that RdR doesn’t have rainy disease issues. That would be a chore! My RdR has one of the longest spring flushes in my garden. It’s one of my most remontant OGRs, too, along with Moss rose Salet.

@E Leon, congratulations on your new Autumn Damasks! I celebrate when I see this old cultivar in gardens. You and Steven in Michigan can compare notes! In what area do you garden? Carol

Rose de Rescht still offering blooms but winding down its spring flush. The spent petals usually drop cleanly. If they don’t drop on their own, I just brush the along the top of the foliage and flowers. The blooms on my RdR are pretty darn rain resistant, as @librarian_gardner_8b_pnw and @oursteelers 8B PNW noted on their plants. Pardon the dead twigs on the variegated hydrangea. I need to wade into the bed and remove those!

@portlandmysteryrose thank you! I garden in zone 9b. I’ve been gardening for over 10 years now, but I am new to old garden roses. This is my first year growing them. I can’t believe I waited this long…

I have never grown but have always been curious about White JC. I love his pink version so much that I am sure I would adore the white one. I am delighted when sports of roses ”remember” their heritage. Your Boufarik so reminds me of Rose de Rescht. Update my Ispahan. About 85% flowers are now in bloom. Trained horizontally, it has at least 5 times as many blooms as last year.

The last blooms of Sidonie. So I guess it bloomed continuously for about 3 weeks. It will bloom again in fall, so you guys have all summer as a break from my bombardment of Sidonie photos lol.

librarian_gardner_8b_pnw Is that mystery rose a once bloomer? I nabbed cuttings from an abandoned lot that had a rose that looks exactly like that. Fairly strong old rose fragrance, some black spot this year, grows about 3x3 with neglect. I see it a number of places around here, usually roadsides and abandon lots, so I am guessing it was a pass-along rose at one time. Not looking for a name, just wondering if yours is similar. The Rose De recht (sp) is a lot more hot, hot pink than the abandoned rose.

Ann, the mystery rose is not a once bloomer, it repeats. It also doesn't get blackspot in my garden. This spring was definitely a blackspot test as some plants that were much clearer in the past got blackspot this year. It has the long lanky, and self pegging growth. My Rose de Rescht has smaller, more fuchsia colored blooms and more compact, very upright growth. Keep us updated on your mystery rose!

Well, Madame Hardy is a workhorse. Her delicate blooms kept melting to brown mush in the record setting rains we had, but she sets so many blooms that from a distance, she still looked lovely.

Up close you can see the rain damage. I haven't had time to deadhead!

I hope the deer stop eating your buds. I can imagine the horror. I have one squirrel who has developed a love for roses and eats ALL OF THE BUDS that are within reach of the fence or at the top of my trellises. I grow a lot of climbing roses so almost everything has fallen prey to this gourmet squirrel.

To everyone: Do any of you have any experience with Louis XIV? I received a notification that he was available to pre-order for the fall from a European seller and am hesitating. He's supposed to be very fragrant and stay small between 2-3 feet which would make him perfect for a pot. But I am also reading reviews of him being a complete wimp with poor vigor and so-so disease resistance. I'd love to know if anyone here grows or grew him and what he was like.

@Mischievous Magpie (CO 5b) Your Sidonie is sublime! That photo says it all. I really appreciate your highlighting her. She is known in rose circles but not grown widely enough.

Like @seasiderooftop, I am not only fine with roses that take a break after first flush, or even bloom only once, I prefer it. I don’t have the energy to keep deadheading and otherwise hovering over and caring for a gazillion roses all summer! Sidonie, other Damasks and many other OGRs are a piece of cake. No cutting at a slant just the right distance from an outfacing bud, blah, blah, blah. Just slice back the plant as needed and call it good. When roses take a break, I can shift my focus to, and actually have the bandwidth to notice, my also precious hydrangeas and daylilies and my lovely young Hibiscus syriacus Bluebird.

@librarian_gardner_8b_pnw I also am caring for a clover patch, it's been claiming more and more of the front yard each year. My neighbor is extremely passive aggressive about it 🙄 But the bees and bunnies adore it so 🤷🏽‍♀️ sorry not sorry.

Our poor white OGR fluffs did not like this spring, but they are troopers. Your MH looks grand from across the frame, and I’ll bet she is still offering some buds and gorgeous fresh blooms in the mix. I pulled all the brown off Botzaris and Madame Plantier. MP gave me a couple of fresh white fluffs and has a few unspoiled buds. Botzaris is still trying to show he’s the biggest post downpour fluff in the garden! He has opening buds and new blooms. The sun is helping immensely!

Librarian - your garden is heavenly!! And your Madame Hardy is a show stopper!! We have a squirrel that runs the fence highways here. Thankfully our dogs are on high alert over it...and the squirrel seems too afraid to come into the yard. No damage that I can see. I hope it stays that way. I'm sorry your squirrel isn't as cautious.

@librarian_gardner_8b_pnw yes do much sun is coming! I did one necessary but boring chore today (and made my back very angry in the process) since my hrandson wasn’t here and i could force myself to just finish.

He’ll be back tomorrow so i want to focus on getting the patio blown, cushions out and all pots and lanterns clean. They like that part cause it means they can play with spray bottles and the blower.

Then I’ll be all ready to sit in the warm sun this weekend and leisurely weed without coming in after two hours looking like a drowned rat and frozen fingers.

Passive aggressive neighbors and their boring, water hog lawns can mind their own business 😁 our tiny front lawn is under trees and doesn't get clover but it does get overgrown with beautiful, soft, fluffy moss in the winter. Another interloper we're happy with. Biodiversity and gardening for microclimate success! Your bunny picture is just perfect.

Beautiful photos Portland Carol! I think this might be my favorite class of roses! I have quite a few babies that I'll enjoy seeing develop in the future.

Shrub Jacques Cartier still has some blooms. Indigo has one last bloom. That’s a beautiful damask-like Gabriel Oak!
