Tapping from inside a solid wall. Help?

Hello everyone,

Hope you're all well!

I've signed up to this forum to look for an advise. I've searched the interned to and fro but couldn't find anything similar.

My partner and I live in an old mid-terrace house (build 1867) and since we moved in (a year ago) we've been having problems with sleeping due to a weird rhythmic tapping coming from one of our bedroom's walls. It usually happens early in the morning (today it was 4:40am) but sometimes at night too. The tapping happens randomly at different times and with different intervals.

The tapper reacts to sound so we've looked for signs of mice or other living creatures in the attic but couldn't find any.

The bedroom is situated on the first floor. The walls are solid brick on both sides (no cavity walls), and we can hear our neighbours when they argue or when their kids play. Also in the bedroom located is a chimney leading to a space where a fireplace used to be.

Here's the video with the tapping I took this morning:

If you have any idea what it might be, please help! We both sleep with earplugs but they tend to fall out when I sleep. Any advise would be highly appreciated!

All the best,

Pawel

I think there's a woodpecker on the building somewhere and the sound is transferring to the wall. It's likely not directly behind the wall but someplace on the outside and the sound is transferring along the framing of the building. That's why it sounds sort of muffled. I have the same thing.

A woodpecker usually does not tap at night but do start early in the morning, around 4:45 am. Look at the outside of your building for signs of woodpecker damage. If you see it, find out how you can safely and legally get the woodpecker to relocate.

Or, as @Mark Bischak, Architect suggests, it's haunted. No help here on that.

I agree that the sound might be originating elsewhere and getting telegraphed through. I've had weird tapping from plumbing as well as critters. Maybe the neighbors have a large dog that thumps the floor when he scratches.

Do see if neighbors have experienced something similar. It might help narrow it down.

I couldn't hear the noises, but "Walmart Fight", the next video, was excellent.

Everyone said the same thing I was going to - that sound travels weirdly sometimes. It doesn't sound supernatural to me. LOL.

Sometimes animals get trapped in fireplaces, particularly ones that aren't used anymore if they aren't closed off well from the roof.. I had a bird in mine that scared the living beejepers out of me. I could hear something thumping around in there. My landlord had just screwed some plywood over the opening and painted it to match the wall, so I carefully took the plywood off and a very happy to be free bird flew out. It was a few minutes of chaos but I closed off the room and opened all the windows and the bird eventually flew away. However I also found a squirrel skeleton and another bird skeleton in there. :(

Have your tried putting out some food and a tasty beverage before going to bed...?

Thanks for the responses so far!

I've lived by the forest for many years before and know how woodpecker sounds. I'm afraid this isn't a one. Today the tapping started at 3:15 then continued till 5:20 with 30-45 min breaks which is super tricky to catch on camera. We've tried placing food around the house and in the attic, and looked for signes of pests but no luck.

I'll speak with neighbours and let you know!

The good news is I'm going to explain the tapping, bad news is you aren't going to like knowing the truth. Toney Orlando and Dawn put it in lyrics,go's something like this.

    TAP TAP TAP

Knock three times on the ceiling if you want me
Twice on the pipe if the answer is no
    Oh my sweetness

    TAP-TAP-TAP
Means you'll meet me in the hallway
Twice on the pipe means you ain't gonna show
If you look out your window tonight
Pull in the string with the note that's attached to my heart
Read how many times I saw you
How in my silence I adored you
Only in my dreams did that wall between us come apart
    Oh my darling
Knock three times on the ceiling if you want me
Twice on the pipe if the answer is no

The tall guy always staring by the pool has the hots for your pardner.

I love this mystery. Where are your HVAC vents? We had a baby squirrel in a vent once. Rescue was successful and it never happened again.

I do like the dog scratching suggestion above. My dogs always wake up around 3 am, maybe it's a lunar thing. They do their morning scratch and the larger one can create quite a thump, thump thump. Even my little one who is quite clumsy when his ambitions are bigger than his legs, makes quite a noise when he stumbles on the stairs.

Oh my wolrd! You won't belive it. My neighbour's dad has dementia and he taps on the wall by his bed when he can't sleep!! Hopefully, he won't forget to stop. Anyway, thanks guys!

I told you it was a human, even told you it was a man and you would be unhappy when you knew the truth. I'm so proud of my supernatural ability to see these things from thousands of miles away and with little to no evidence to go on. Now that you know the truth, pray your pardner doesn't start answering him. 😍😘

OMG, mystery solved! Tell your neighbor to be glad he only taps the wall when he wakes up. My friend's mother had dementia and one night when she woke up, she called the police and told them she was being held hostage. The police showed up at the neighbor's house because that's the house number she gave. My friend saw the commotion outside when the police arrived, finally went over to the neighbor when she saw them in deep discussion with the police and when hearing the reason for the police to arrive, she sheepishly offered that it could have been her mother calling. Ugh. They searched her house and the neighbors' and all they found was an elderly lady with dementia, wide awake and very happy to see all the handsome men in uniform, with no recall that she had summoned them. LOL.

Check to see if he's using Morse code. He could have learned it in the military and is reliving his glory days. Very sweet ending, bless his heart.
