Thank you, Brandon! Lovin’ the rose videos!! I just signed up again on RVR for Treasure Trail. I somehow either missed or never received notification of the last batch. Duchesse de Brabant is likely my favorite Tea rose ever! And you know I adore Ellen Tofflemire. :-) Yours in MO is a paler mauve than mine usually is here in OR. The color of mine resembles Sheila’s. Your ET is GORGEOUS beyond words, @Sheila z8a Rogue Valley OR!! Mine is still all buds at the moment.

@portlandmysteryrose normally my Ellen Tofflemire is darker. this spring my purple/mauves seemed to stay pale compared to last year. It seems like we have had a really wet and humid spring this year so I wonder if that had anything to do with it. I dug Ellen Tofflemire as a sucker from Paul Barden’s patch so I’m not concerned about identity issues there

@Brandon Garner Oh, no! I didn’t mean to imply Ellen Tofflemire’s ID is incorrect. I was just noting the climate color difference. Even year to year in my garden, ”mauve-purple” roses are often pink roses. Your ET is beautiful! As you know first hand, in my region of OR (and your former region) the slightly acid soil, the clouds and the stretch of cooler weather are enough to encourage ”purpling”. And I do love purple! :-) It’s SO great that you were able to visit Paul’s garden and dig starts of his roses before your move. Your OR transplants seem to be thriving in your MO garden! How is the soil there in farming country? When I lived in MN, I was amazed by the high quality, friable soil! TX and OR, not so much. Two of my grandparents grew up on farms in MO. Carol

@portlandmysteryrose the soil in my yard is mostly brown-ish clay, with lots of worms. But to be fair, to me it doesn't look too much different than the soil in my yards in OR or even GA. Maybe I have just been lucky. That is neat that a couple of your grandparents grew up on farms in MO.

Brandon, thank you for the Tuscany Superb video! You know I LOVE TS!! She’s my ”if I could only take one rose to an island” rose. It was informative to see her entire shrubby self on your video. I think we need more full shots of roses on the forum and elsewhere. I liked the way TS swayed as you picked up the cane with blooms. Her movement in the garden is graceful, and I don’t think that’s easily noted without seeing it on video. You got some great shots of her lovely foliage as well as her gorgeous purply blooms. That’s especially important since she’s a once blooming OGR. It’s really helpful that you mentioned own-root suckering and grafting. I wish I’d known about Gallicas’ spreading tendencies when I first started growing them! They do require special cultivation to manage the suckers. Grafted can be a relieving alternative. I hope it’s okay if I drop this link into Melissa’s Gallica thread for reference. I’m going to post some more photos of my TS today. Carol

@portlandmysteryrose I am fine with you using the link however. My first Gallica rose, I didn't know anything about suckering, I was just intrigued by a rose that had so little in knowledge about it's background, but was so old. (Charles de Mills) I know that there are older roses but back in late 1997 I didn't know much about any other roses than Hybrid Teas and English roses.

Now I consider suckering a plus and wish more of my roses were to sucker. If only I could get my hillside covered by suckering roses so I wouldn't have to mow the blasted thing.

Ha, ha! I’m with you, Brandon, on both counts. (1) The less lawn the better. I have a tiny circle of lawn and a manual push mower. (2) And the more Gallica the better! Most of my plants are own root. I spade and pot up the suckers and give them away…with instructions and warnings, of course. Carol

Desiree Parmentier is one of the Gallicas that I would love to squeeze into my, or my sister’s, garden. I need to track her down and get on a waitlist or notification sign up. I don’t grow DP but I do have her ”sister” rose, the blush Alba, Felicite Parmentier. I was just reading again about Desiree on Paul Barden’s reference website and Hedgerow Rose’s website. I could gaze at her images for hours. Thank you so much for the live video on this charming OGR! It’s fun and informative to see her in motion. DP should be widely grown, and I hope gardeners are inspired by your video to try her. I long to smell her fragrance! In my opinion, Gallicas have scents somewhere in the sweet to lemony range. It is growing up right and tall in my garden. If my neighbor on the other side of the fence wasn't such a "nothing but grass" yard person I probably would have woven it along the fence horizontally when it was younger. Either way works
