How to make entry feel bigger/more inviting?

We're moving into a new home soon and there is a half wall as soon as you enter the front door. Any ideas on what to do with the half wall to make the entry feel bigger and more inviting?


We were thinking of maybe adding some vertical panels to the half wall or some shelves.
