Mayne replace current stone woth a white marble and paint rhe mante shelf white

I feel like I need something more textured like this but I’m not sure.

the rough stone look feels a little more rustic

if you did a rough srone, and prefer that textrue, id do a true white stone. not annoff white/ beige as in example pic

I like the slate, but not in squares. The room feels unfinished, not outdated. Art over the couch, and a conversation area that feels like a conversation area.

Erin, I know what you mean….renovating/updating has this ripple effect! I think you could absolutely do a fireplace like in your inspiration photo….it doesn’t read “rustic” to me at all. It has character, but it’s nice and clean; it would go with your kitchen, and looks more “organic” and casual than marble or tile. You’ll probably want to update your sofa etc as well….that will have a huge impact.

Your fireplace strikes me as being too wide for the room. So, would suggest you decrease the width if possible. If it is a metal box fireplace with a framed surround it should be possible. In looking at your second photo the idea of using your countertop material as a surround or possibly a mantel came to mind. If the countertop is quartz it should be acceptable by code as it is a noncombustible material. Good luck!

The slate really isn't bad. I think it's the rustic mantel that doesn't go with the new kitchen. A different shape of mantel painted a dark gray to go with the slate might be enough to change it. I can't picture white with it. Here is one that I like - it's honed Jet Mist granite.

I think your fireplace looks fine. I think you need smaller and more furniture. Everything is anchored against the wall and the table looks lost in the middle
